1.(a) Displacement reactions occur between metals and metal ions.

Displacement reactions can be used to determine the order of reactivity of metals such as

lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), and silver (Ag).

The ionic equation for a displacement reaction is shown.

The ionic half-equations for this reaction are shown.

Ni(s)  Ni2+(aq) + 2e–

Pb2+(aq) + 2e–  Pb(s)

The ionic half-equations show that electrons are donated by nickel atoms and accepted by

lead ions.

(i) Identify the reducing agent in the displacement reaction.

2. (a) A student investigated the reaction of calcium carbonate with an excess of dilute

hydrochloric acid by measuring the volume of carbon dioxide produced at 10 second

intervals.

(i) How long did it take from the start of the experiment to collect 30 cm 3 of carbon dioxide?

(iv) What effect do the following have on the rate of this reaction? Explain your answers.

● Increasing the temperature of the reaction mixture.

increase.

3. (a) Electrolysis of concentrated aqueous sodium chloride using inert electrodes forms

chlorine, hydrogen and sodium hydroxide.

(i) What is meant by the term electrolysis? (2)

= Electrolysis is the process of using electricity to break down a compound.

(ii) Name a substance that can be used as the inert electrodes. (1)

= platinum is a substance that can be used as the inert electrodes.

(iii) Write an ionic half-equation for the formation of hydrogen during this electrolysis. (1)

(iv) Give the formulae of the four ions present in concentrated aqueous sodium chloride. (2)

= Na+, Cl+, H+, OH-.

(v) Explain how sodium hydroxide is formed during this electrolysis. (2)

= sodium hydroxide is formed when, sodium and hydrogen are attracted to the

cathode. They together produce oxygen at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode.

The hydrogen and sodium which are left are used to formed sodium hydroxide.

4. A student adds aqueous sodium hydroxide from a burette into 25.0 cm 3 of dilute

sulphuric acid. The student measures the pH value of the mixture during the addition of the

sodium hydroxide.

(a) Describe how the pH value changes. (1)

= the pH value will change because sulfuric acid is an acid and sodium hydroxide is

an alkali.

(b) Sulphuric acid is a strong acid.

(i) What is meant by the term acid? (1)

= Acid is a substance that produce hydrogen ions in aqueous solution.

(ii) What is the difference between a strong acid and a weak acid? (2)

= Strong acid is an acid that ionizes completely in aqueous solution where as weak

acid is an acid that ionized partially in a solution.

(c) Describe what you would observe when sulfuric acid is added to

(i) blue litmus paper, (1)

= the blue litmus paper will turn red when sulfuric acid is added.

(ii) iron powder. (1)

= when sulfuric acid is added to iron powder, the iron will react with the sulfuric acid

and it will produce hydrogen gas.
