RTJ GROOVE MEASUREMENT USING SURYAVELLI MAKE BALL CALIPER

MEASUREMENT METHOD:

Pitch Distance can be directly measured (absolute value) using SURYAVELLI’S Ball Dial and Ball Vernier calipers.
If Digital ball caliper is used that is to be set to ‘0’ first as explained in annexure – A before any measurement.

Measurement of OD & ID is not directly possible against the actual drawings. To make it directly measurable,
we have to derive values of ID1 and OD1 from actual drawing OD and ID and give in the production drawings
so that our operators or inspectors can directly measure it.

Use the following method to arrive Specified Values for OD and ID for production:

W – Groove width specified in the drawing (Mean value to be taken not minimum maximum values eg. If
Min 11.709mm and Max 12.116mm then mean value is 11.9125+/-0.2mm is to be taken for
calculation of OD1 and ID1)
PD – Pitch Diameter specified in the drawing
PD1– Measured Pitch Diameter using the Ball Caliper which is PD.
ID – Actual Inner Diameter.
ID1 –Measurable Inner Diameter, using ball caliper. To be calculated from drawing PD and W
and given in the production drawing.
OD – Actual Outer Diameter.
OD1 – Measurable Outer Diameter, using ball caliper. To be calculated from drawing PD and
W and given in the production drawing
R - Radius of the ball in the Ball caliper

1. PD = Directly Measurable as PD1.

OD1 Calculation:
2. OD1 = PD – W+ (2x R/tan33.5)

ID1 Calculation:
3. ID1 = PD + W – (2xR/tan33.5)

EXAMPLE:

Customer Drawing:
ID

PD1

OD 11.709-
12.116

95.250

Here width (W) given in the customer drawing is 11.709 – 12.116 mm

Take Mean Value (W) = 11.9125+/-0.2mm

Ball Diameter in this case is 6.35 mm so ball Radius R = 6.35/2=3.175mm

Now calculate OD and ID for direct measurement as given below.

OD = PD – W + (2xR/tan 33.5) = 95.250 – 11.9125 + (2 x 3.175/tan 33.5) = 92.9313 +/-0.2mm

ID = PD + W – (2xR/tan 33.5) = 95.250 + 11.9125 – (2 x 3.175/tan33.5) = 97.860 +/-0.2mm

PRODUCTION DRAWING:

97.86 +/-0.2

PD1

92.9313+/-0.2
11.709-
12.116
95.250

Now we can directly measure the ID1 and OD1 using SURYAVELLI’s Ball caliper. If the observed value for
ID1 and OD1 are within specified value in production drawing, then ID and OD are acceptable. Also if
ID1, OD1 and PD1 are within specified value, then bevel angle of the groove is acceptable.

Annexure - A

Measurement Using Digital Ball Caliper:

For Digital Caliper we should set ‘0’ at first before any measurement.

Usually set at the value (100-the ball diameter)mm using slip gauges.

Example:

If the ball diameter is 4.762mm then we have to set ‘0’ at 100-4.762=95.2380 mm using slip gauges.

95.2380 slip gauges

1.Pitch diameter measurement:

Measure Pitch diameter and add 100 to the observed value to get the actual value.

2. OD measurement:

Measure the OD as defined in the previous section and add 100 to the observed value.

3. ID measurement:

Measure the ID as defined previous section and add 100 to the observed value.
