About Relief Partners Uganda (RPU)

Relief Partners Uganda is a Non-Governmental Organisation, we address the world’s first

Sustainable Development Goal-No Poverty . Relief Partners Uganda’s passion and
specialty is to eradicate ultra-poverty in rural communities. We emphasise engagement,
inclusion, participation and capacity enhancement of the poor to attain and sustain self-
sufficiency.
Relief Partners Uganda’s work is based on three broad Thematic areas; women’s Socioeconomic
empowerment, Youth agripreneurship, Climate ,and natural resource governance.
About the Mvule restoration initiative
Mvule tree is an indigenous tree specie whose history of popularity was an initiative of the late
Semei Kakungulu a colonial chief who historians wrote about and who poets scribed severally. A
tree whose gestation is estimated to be around 60 years and whose longevity is way above its
gestation period, is a specie the twentieth and the twenty-first generations just read about. Mvule
tree is rich in preserving ambient climate of an area among other many uses. This project
therefore aims at restoring indigenous trees among which is Mvule tree. This however will take a
new dimension as most forest land is no more, the indigenous trees will be planted in gazetted
places like government land say at local government office sites, church land, government school
lands, police stations, prison land, cultural lands.
The Problem
Among many reasons why Church Hill chose to name Uganda the pearl of Africa, was its
ambient climate whose existence was majorly a contribution of its indigenous trees. However,
his description can hardly pause a meaning today and if Church Hill was live there is a
possibility that he would change his minds and rename Uganda depending on how Uganda’s
naturalness has faded over time. The increase in population came along with several factors like
agriculture, settlement, lumbering, charcoal burning, activities that led to cutting natural forests
for survival and economic reasons. A large chunk of natural forests with indigenous species has
dilapidated courtesy of man’s thoughtless actions. Mushrooming artificial forests mainly
comprised of eucalyptus and pine tree species have replaced natural forests but they are short
lived and besides, them being personal forests, the owners have total control. This has led to
changing wind directions, humidity, temperature changes and change in rainfall patterns.
Justification of the project
A generation during which the universe has converged efforts to fight climate change calls for
innovative interventions at community levels. This project is no doubt a great addition to UN’s
sustainable development goal 13 efforts. Massive global deforestation has been proved by
researchers and environmentalists as a major cause of climate change. Pleasing to mention
however, the same academia has proved that restoration of natural forests is paramount in
restoration of ambient climate. Developed economies like the USA are currently using Drones to
plant trees in isolated and hard to reach areas so are other Scandinavian countries. In Uganda, the
National Forestry Authority and environment bodies have in one way or the other have worked
to restore natural forests, their efforts however, have to be complimented by activists and all
concerned. If we coil our tails and wait for central government and international bodies to do the
little things, we will continue to lament and face the devastating effects of climate change. So,
this is an answer to the UN’s SDG 13’s call.
Target area and beneficiaries.
Mubende District is in Buwekula county, in the western part of the Buganda region. It’s
bordering Ssembabule District, Kyenjojo District, Mubende municipality, Gomba district. It has
an approximate population of about 04 million people mostly youth and late adolescents, it has
one referral hospital serving a population of about 4 million people. Predominantly, people
depend on subsistence farming, the ultra-poor youth and women who are a target, can’t spend at
least 1.90 US dollars a day. They are single mothers, widows, unemployed youth, disabled, and
HIV positive. While some are semi-literate, the greatest population is completely illiterate,
access to proper health care is a day dream, most of them are landless because the region is
affected by rampant land grabbing, they can’t afford good education for their children. The foes
have poor housing facilities with mud and grass thatched houses, they are geographically
isolated, and low esteemed. They have little or no capital assets at their disposal, this community
has high rates of teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and school dropouts. They survive on menial
and manual labor, they are hyperactive during crop planting to harvesting periods but redundant
during lean seasons, they are disconnected from markets, rarely covered by social programming,
and besides, they can’t sustain the basics of life.

Objectives
Overall objective
To plant and restore 20000 selected natural indigenous tree species in Mubende district by 2023.
Specific objectives
To plan 20000 mvule trees in Mubende district in gazetted areas by 2023 to restore natural tree
species
To sensitise the young generation and all stake holders about the usefulness of planting
indigenous trees in their homes and communities.
Project activities
Procurement of Mvule tree seedlings from known tree experts in Uganda
A total of 04 meetings each with at least 20 participants will be held with different stakeholders
including district functionaries, students, cultural leaders, religious leaders and other government
functionaries
04 Nursery beds will then be set up which will as well act as learning grounds for tree planting
champions
Media campaigns on radio (12) and several social media campaigns will flourish as back-up to
on ground sensitisation movements
Training tree planting champions will then follow, a total of 20 community tree planting
champions will be trained the A-Z of tree planting and care.
A total of 10000 Mvule Trees will be planted in 500 gazetted areas including local government
office lands, prisons land, government schools lands, catholic and protestant church lands, police
station lands, barracks lands, and cultural lands in the district as a pilot initiative to set precedent
for subsequent indigenous tree planting campaigns country wide.
Establishment of memorandums of understanding with care takers of places where these trees
will be planted, stating clearly that they will commit to take fragile care of the trees under our
guidance and supervision.
Supervision, report writing and dissemination to all stakeholders and project funders will then
follow.
Expected Outcomes.
Through this project, we will plant 10000 Mvule tree species and ultimately restore and preserve
future climate in the region.

Sustainability plan
Relief Partners Uganda has established a nursery bed which is presumed to be a going concern.
The project will continue to plant mvule tree species even after first funding, we have
memorandum of association with National Forestry Authority of Uganda, so they will
periodically give us tree seedlings to plant, we have MOU’s with other implementing partners
and international funders.
