Young and Able to Save the World

“If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito.”
(Anita Roddick)

Are you familiar with the name above? Yes, Anita Roddick was the founder of
The Body Shop, the natural body products inspired by nature. What she said is
absolutely right because when we talk about saving this world, no action is too small.
Whatever we do, no matter how small you think it is, can affect this world- be it in
your immediate surroundings or in a faraway land like the Arctics, Liechtenstein, or
Vanatu. Just make a small change in your life, be different, and help stop global
warming. Here is the list of the things you can do as a teen.
1. Turn off electronic devices. Shut off your computer, including the monitor,
when not in use. The same goes for televisions, radios, and stereos. Conserve
energy by turning them off, not only putting them in sleep mode, because
when you use sleep mode, actually you still use electricity.

2. Sort your garbage. Start sorting your trash. Kitchen trash goes to the landfill,
while paper, plastic, and glass can go to another place. Try to apply the 3Rs:
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. If it is possible, and other R such as Replant,
Repair, or other kind of R that can contribute to saving the environment.

3. Take public transportation, ride your bike, or walk. Using a motor vehicle
is the most air-polluting act an average citizen can commit since 92% of CO2
in the air is produced by motor vehicles using fossil fuel. Carbon dioxide and
monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons are released into the air when
fuel is burned.
4. Bring your own bag to shop. It takes 10-20 years to decompose plastic bags.
So, reducing the use of plastic bags and using your cloth or recycled tote bags
instead could be a good choice. Nowadays, there are loads of green tote bags
you can buy in department stores. You can also make one yourself or even
make money creating this kind of bags. Use some slogans about the
environment or decorate your masterpieces with scraps of Indonesian
traditional cloths to make them more attractive.

5. Consume organic food. For sure, this kind of food is healthier not only for
your body, but also for the earth. That’s because organic products don’t use
chemicals that pollute water supply and soil.

6. Plant a tree. Trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for us to
breathe. Besides, their roots can hold the soil to avoid landslides. So, let’s
plant more trees and take care of them!

7. Carpool when you can. If you can’t avoid using your own vehicle when
commuting, ask your friends to join you. This can help you save fuel because
all of you share the money on it. It also can reduce carbon dioxide. The
compounds of vehicle emissions, besides causing global warming, are also
known to damage the lung tissues and can lead to and worsen respiratory
diseases such as asthma.

How long does it take to decompose?

Paper 2,5 months

Orange peel 6 months
Milk carton 5 years
Cigarette butt 10-12 years
Plastic bag 10-20 years
Disposable diaper 75 years
Tin can 100 years
Glass can 200-500 years

A. Answer these questions.

1. Does ‘sleep mode’ use still contribute to the emission of carbon dioxide?
Explain.
Answer : Using sleep mode does not produce carbon dioxide emissions
but when using sleep mode, it actually still uses electricity which can
cause global warming.

2. What causes acid rain occur?

Answer : Acid rain is caused by sulfur (sulfur) which is an impurity in
fossil fuels and nitrogen in the air which reacts with oxygen to form sulfur
dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

3. Why do we need to sort garbage?

Answer : Try to apply the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. If it is
possible, and other R such as Replant, Repair, or other kind of R that can
contribute to saving the environment, maintain public health, avoid piles
of garbage in rivers and sea and improve community welfare

4. How long does it take for a sardines can to decompose?

Answer : Sardine cans must be recycled. If not recycled, sardine cans
take 200 years to break down

5. How can growing a tree help to reduce global warming? Explain.

Answer : Trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for us to
breathe. Besides, their roots can hold the soil to avoid landslides.
B. Make a mind mapping for the text above.

C. Write down what you have done and/or your idea(s) to help saving the
Earth in a form of short paragraph containing 100 - 120 words.

Answer : What can be done to help this earth is that we have to raise
awareness of each of us to care about the environment around us. By
planting trees, disposing of garbage in its place and carrying out the
recycling process, reducing the amount of fuel and vehicle use, using
alternative energy, reducing electricity use for both households and industry,
using public transportation, eating organic food, using bags when shopping,
Stop using microbeads found in cosmetics, or joining the community that
cares about the environment. We have to change our lifestyle slowly to be
more concerned with the surrounding environment, because the little things
we do will also bring changes to the conditions of this earth.
