SHS Students in the Modern World: Effects of Playing

Online Games Among the Senior High School Students in


Callejon National High School

Rationale of the Study


Despite the pandemic, students strive to adapt to the new normal situation.
Whereby the education system changed to follow the health and safety measures
for the sake of the students and the society. According to Wikipedia,
an online game is a video game that can be played in part or entirely using 
the Internet or another computer network. Online games became the new hobby of
the students to cope with boredom, anxiety, and loneliness. Yet, due to the enormity
of expending hours playing online games. The impact of playing games turns out to
adversely affect the students. Innovation and an immeasurable
number of changes in technology give a huge influence on the gaming industry.

Online Gaming has been added as part of international sports competitions


worldwide. As of 2021, statista recorded 3.24 billion gamers across the globe. Most
of the gamers are students, arising the chance to have mental health disorders such
as gaming addiction. And may affect their physical health which could lead to a
deadly problem not only in society but in every life of the students. Especially,
Senior High School is a curriculum for the students to learn more about the
profession or dream they wanted to pursue. This study aims to determine the
number of SHS students engaged in e-gaming activities, and how it affects their
lives as a student. Also, to help the teachers, parents, and researchers that
struggling to find the reasons for their related problems stated in this study.

The academic performance of the students is affected by playing online


games, such as Call of Duty Mobile, Pubg, Mobile Legends, Valorant, and a lot of
games to mention that are mostly played by the students. In the year 2021 whereby
distance learning was implemented, A viral video of a student playing an online
game while attending an online class became a glimpse of a problem that needed
immediate action. The teacher was furious because of the student's lack of morality.
Therefore, the researcher must analyze the situation of the SHS students to
determine if SHS students in Callejon National High School have cases of gaming
addiction.

Particularly the level of urgency to specify the problem and explore the
opinions of the students regarding the problem. And this research will help to
provide information regarding gaming addiction and its effects among the SHS
students in Callejon National High School. In order to prevent the huge problem that
could happen even now, which by gaming addiction may raise an alarming case
whereby the social interaction only happen at virtual world. I use this research not
only to contribute to the future researchers but to raise an awareness for everyone.
Due to the massive admiration of everyone on online gaming. Everybody is being
complacent to the effect that could affect them badly.

Statement of the problem


1. Why do you play online games?
2. What emotions do you feel when playing games?
3. How many hours a day do you play online games? Or how frequently do you play
online games?
4. Did you submit all your activities to school on time? How do you manage your
time to complete it?
5. What benefits do you gain when you play online games?
6. What online games do you play?
7. How many hours do you spend studying in a day?

Scope and Delimitation


The range of this study includes a total of 20 SHS students from different strands in
Callejon National High School.

Significance of the Study


The researcher considers this study to help the following to administer:

Students
This study will help the students to learn more about gaming addiction. To be able to
assess themself in managing their time, especially when playing online games.
Parents
This study helps the parents to determine how will they guide their children better.
Teachers
This study provides information to the teachers about the student's behavior and
academic performance influenced by playing games.
Researcher
This study will contribute to the
researchers providing more information to support their study.

Review Related Literature


Online Games or Internet Games are the widespread hobbies today of the

students in the Philippines. Online games are played thru internet access, which is
different from video games and computer games since online games are normally
platform-independent and powered up by creative gaming creators, as the online
games became more entertaining and nerve-racking to play. March 2020, Statista
conveyed a survey of Filipino students to determine how many Filipino students are
allegedly playing online games. And Statista recorded that 75% of Filipino students
said that they play online games. Also, Philippine esports market issued publicly the
43 million active gamers and great innovation in technology makes proudly flags the
percentage of players remained since 2017 with an average of 12.9%. As claimed
by knepublishing.com the reason for the popularity of online games is the benefits
that they gain while playing wherein it serves as their stress reliever, their escape
world from the real world, and gives a thrill the players. Furthermore, online games
becoming the bridge for everyone to reconnect together and found friends in the
virtual world.
The top 4 popular games in the Philippines are classified by similarweb.com,
Which are mostly played by the students. Mobile Legends is an online 5v5 game
battle arena that is also called ML, developed by montoon. In terms of the free-play
shooter, Call of Duty is the best game to play developed by the timi studio group that
launched in October 2019. The powerful imagination game for the Filipinos is the
Roblox online game by Roblox Corporation wherein users are allowed to program
games and play! A South-Korean game hit the Philippines with the unique
characteristics of open-world fantasy called M1R4. In its unique feature to train their
characters and grow them to fight them off on the battlefield. And all these games
are frequently played and enjoyed by Filipino Students.

Related Studies
Based on Rodica and Talania (2019) most respondents in MCSMAI of how
online games affects their academic performance. Is they can’t focus on learning,
doing homework, projects and having low average grades. And physical distress as
the result of adverse effect of playing online games. Since the researchers found out
how online gaming affects adversely the student. According to them the best way to
solve the problem is to discipline the students and manage their time when using
gadgets. Study revealed that a human brain could easily damage or destroy due its
huge impact influenced by technology. However, most of the parents, teachers and
netizen were captivated to the negative perception of online gaming due to
behavioral issues of the gamers influenced by playing online gaming. Such as they
spend to much time on playing online games rather instead of studying. That’s why
most of the netizens are complaining how the evolution of technology and gaming
industry becoming a huge distraction in many aspects.

Literature Review

The effects of playing online games on Senior high school students gave
a benefit and give negative effect due to its huge impact of “unstoppable” playing of
online games. The unending innovation of technology made a huge part to every
people’s lives. And with the evolution of gaming industry became the New Haven of
the 40% of the population all over the world. As result of the study “Effect of Online
Games in Academic Performance among Senior High School in MCSMAI” that
clearly shows that playing online games have negative effects on every student’s
academic performance. Also, according to foreign studies Granic et.al (2014). The
vast number of potential negative effects may result into violence, addiction, and
depression. Intellectual Benefits of the playing online games could not be affecting
adversely a child according to Angeles (2004).
The study believes that some games can be effective tools for learning. If a
child only chose to play educational games that could gain a skill from playing such
as fast thinking, analytical thinking and, eye-hand coordination. But potential positive
effects shall not be complacently ignored due to the dramatically changed in gaming
industry, most of the popular games could left an impact to every individual.
Because of its increasingly complex, diverse, realistic and, became social in nature.
By specifying perceptions from developmental, positive, social psychology and
media psychology of the candidates the study showed that playing online games
may foster real-world psychosocial benefits.

In literature review of N.L Carganey (2004) regarding on Violent Video Game

and lack of morality. There is correlational evidence that video games increase a
person’s aggressive cognition, young adolescents who plays a lot of violent games
had a high hostile at tribution biases because most of them reflects the effects in
their behavior and that is being aggressive and being socially maladjusted. The

violent game play and aggressive cognition is 0.27.

In mid-1980 to mid-1990’s average hours of playing in a day lasts for 4 hours


in mid-1980’s which by all teens and kids had the same result. While in mid-1990’s
whereby the average hours of playing increased into 4.5 hours for girls in 4 th grade
and 7 hours of playing in boys that in 4th grade. And in the past years not only kids in
elementary whom recorded in the studies. Both oldies and teens had shared the
same result of average hours playing in a day. In addition, parental guidance in
playing video game vanished. According to Walsh, 89% teens participated in the
surveyed said their parents did not prohibit them in terms of their playing hours.
Thus, 90% of the respondents from grades 8-12 reported that their parents did not
bother to check the ratings of video games they purchased. Yet only 1% of the
respondents reported that their parents monitor their playing hours and choosing

stated that as the violence happens with the huge influence of gaming. In terms of
learning competencies and expectation. The experience of gameplay seems affects
the student’s expectation of learning activities and as we are replacing the learning
perspectives with the help of educational games. Nevertheless, games still could red
herring. On the other hand, games have been frequently used as research topic,
overcoming the confusing overlaps.
