Bachelor's degree in foreign languages with an emphasis on English
Materials design
Suesca - Cundinamarca
September 2021
• Explain the following principles with your own words and give one example per
principle:

➢ Principle of openness: this deals with the different situations of communication in

foreign languages and how they contribute to the educational process. For example:
audio files, video storage or video platforms such as YouTube, teachertube, among
others, virtual robots and Skype.
➢ Principle of integrated education: these are the different technological tools and
resources that are implemented in the EFL teaching process, for example e-learning.
➢ Principle of interactivity: this helps all participants in the educational process to
communicate fully with each other synchronously and asynchronously, example, blogs,
chats, forums, or Skype videoconferences.
➢ Visualization and demonstration principle: this helps exploration into the realities of the
target language by the features it possesses. With the help of hypermedia technology
it has become possible to structure and organize learning material in formats such as
text, animations, graphics, podcasts, among others.
➢ Principle of coherence and systematic approach to training: this deals with the
development of training methods and techniques that create a clear relationship
between what has been studied and the new learning material.
➢ Redundancy principle: positively stimulates students' reflective activity. Teachers tend
to work with this information which they then analyze and synthesize for problem
solving, example, educational workshops.
➢ Activity principle: this has 3 characteristics.
➢ Verbal activity, in which it is important to apply various methods and forms of peer
work, e.g., teaching songs in English.
➢ Emotional activity, which is related to positive motivation for their activities, and
satisfaction with the results of learning.
➢ Intellectual activity, which includes methods and techniques to meet the needs of
students and require further evaluation, example, reading comprehension texts.
• Give at least three examples of the following methods for EFL teaching in the e-
learning environment:

Training methods
-Webconference
-Blogs
-Audio-lingual
Demonstration methods
-Audio
-Texts
-Graphics
Problem-solving methods
-Multimedia scrapbook
-Hotlist
-Subject sampler
-Webquest
-Treasure hunt
Team working methods
-Skype
-Meet
-Blogs
Creative research methods
-Software
-Drive
-Web project

• According to the article “Develop Reading Materials”, what are the most important
elements that material developers should take into account in selecting and
resenting the reading materials? Explain.
One of the most important elements for material developers is the consolidation of knowledge
of the mother tongue, since knowing their own language at a good level and having a good
command of vocabulary in the mother tongue the student will be able to investigate and learn
a new language with a little more ease, knowing their language is considered a personal,
academic and social achievement, which with the proper selection of material and the
presentation of the materials will be the key to the reader's success.
The reading material that motivates the reader and satisfies all the reader's needs will serve to
define the ideal themes needed for the material to be created; developers must take into
account authenticity, variety and creativity in their creations.

• According to the document “Materials for Teaching Writing”, explain the

following approaches
➢ The traditional product-oriented approach: focuses on written texts. It was thought that
if the texts were created by talented and knowledgeable people, the people who
worked with this material would also acquire these skills easily.
➢ The process-oriented approach: this replaced the traditional approach and sought a
more immersonal approach to writing; taking into account that writing is a creative
process that involves several stages to achieve a competent piece of writing.
➢ The modern approach: this approach is based on investigating how good writers write;
it stands out for three aspects, first of all because people write to communicate with
readers, the next aspect is that people write to meet a specific objective and finally that
writers should look for the target audience of their writings and the purposes they have.

• What are the five advantages of using authentic materials in a writing

classroom? explain them and give real examples per advantage.

1. Authentic materials connect the classroom to the outside world, and to explore the outside
world for their learning, for example, applications such as YouTube or virtual reality apps.
2. Authentic materials are often inexpensive and easily accessible resources for learners,
such as photocopies, or stationery to create the material in the middle of the class.
3. Authentic materials expose learners to commercial language used in the creation of
functional texts, example magazines or the use of audios and songs in the classroom.
4. Authentic materials support and encourage creativity, therefore trainees will develop diverse
skills that can be applied to real life, for example magazines, websites, blogs or newspapers.
5. Authentic materials make teaching and assessment emphasize learners' language skills, for
example grammar in the case of second language learning.

• Considering the characteristics, you must consider when designing reading or

writing materials and the OVI about worksheets that is in the second unit in the
Learning environment, you are going to design one analog worksheet (printed
for face-to-face environments), and one digital worksheet (for online
environments).
