Main lesson Nation-building. Don’t forget to highlight important information you need to
(Content Notes): remember.

(15mins.) *What is Nation-building?

Nation-building is the process whereby a society of people with diverse origins,

histories, languages, cultures, and religions come together within the boundaries of
a sovereign state with a unified constitutional and legal dispensation, a national
public education system, an integrated national economy, shared symbols, and
values, as equals, to work towards eradicating the divisions and injustices of the
past; to foster unity; and promote a countrywide conscious sense of being proudly
Filipino, committed to the country and open to the continent and the world.

The primary objective of nation-building is to make a violent society peaceful.

Security, food, shelter, and basic services should be provided first. Economic and
political objectives can be pursued once these first-order needs are met.

Nation-building is not just the duty of our leaders but it’s also the responsibility of
every

Filipino citizen. Hence, the state recognized the youth as the most dynamic
segment of the population and the future of the Nation. The youth are considered
the social agents of change. They must be educated and provided with
opportunities to achieve their full potential. They must learn how to be responsible
and how to be critically minded about the social realities. They must be empowered
to be involved in social issues and advocacies while inculcating in them the qualities
of good a citizen.

Who are the Youth?

The United Nations defines 'youth' as persons aged between 15 and 24. However,
this definition is flexible. In the Philippines, the age brackets for youth are from 15-
to 30 years old, according to the Youth in Nation-Building Act (RA8044).

*What is the provision under the 1987 constitution which recognizes the role of
youth in nation-building?

Art 2 section 13 of the 1987 Philippine constitution states that "The State recognizes
the vital role of the youth in nation-building and shall promote and protect their
physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual and social well-being. It shall inculcate in the
youth patriotism and nationalism; and encourage their involvement in public and
