LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. ACTIVATING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

a. In the previous meeting, you have explored a few examples of local wisdoms
practiced by Indonesian citizens in different ethnic groups and cultures. Find 1-2
more examples of local wisdoms that you think are very unique and truly
representing an identity of Indonesian citizens. Write your findings below.
1. “Membungkukan Badan” / bend over. This local wisdom could familiar in jawa, and yogyakarta. The younger people
will bend over when they was walked and passing the older. This means that the younger must be polite to the older.
2. “Lompat Batu Nias” was a local wisdom from Nias Island, north Sumatra. The boy from nias will jump over a stone with
2 meter height and 40 cm wide. They jump over the stone to be considered as a adult and mature man.

b. Work in a small group of 3-4 members. Share your findings and discuss why those local
wisdoms are unique, and what aspects in those local wisdoms that truly represent
our identity as a nation. Write your discussion results below.
1. Lompat Batu Nias was a very unique one because imagine how height the stone was. For me, it was really a difficult
task to do to jump over the stone. I cant imagine if I was fail during the jump and hit the stone that hard.
2. The one that in my opinion was really represent our identity as a nation was a “bend over” local wisdom. Because I
think almost every people doing that and it was respresent our country as a polite country. Indonesia by some country
was labeled by a most polite country and bend over local wisdom was really represent it.

In 2012, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized
the Balinese agricultural irrigation system, known as Subak, as a part of the world's cultural heritage.
In fact, it was included in two categories of the world's cultural heritage. The first category refers to
“cultural heritage objects”, including Subak Temple, rice fields and the irrigation system. The second
category is “intangible cultural heritage with social values” since Subak promotes not only an
interaction and balance of humans and nature, but also the spirit of mutual cooperation among its
members, resulting in it being regarded as a social glue in Balinese society.

In the previous meeting, you have read the following article reporting a national
workshop on local wisdom and Pancasila ideology by the Indonesian Ministry of Social
Affairs. Read the text once again and answer the questions that follow!

ACTUALIZATION OF LOCAL WISDOM REFLECTS THE PANCASILA IDEOLOGY

1SURABAYA (December 4th, 2019) - Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs, Juliari P. Batubara
opened the “2019 National Wisdom National Workshop” and “National Reconciliation of
Non-Cash Social Assistance Distribution of Hope Family Program (PKH)”, which took
place in Surabaya, Wednesday (12/4) morning. On the occasion, the Minister of Social
Affairs emphasized that the values of local wisdom are cultures that must be
maintained, respected and valued.

2Local wisdom (kearifan lokal, also known as riflok) as part of local customs originating
from diverse ethnic groups reflects that Indonesia is a multi-ethnic, religious, racial and
group state. Diversity is a reality of the Indonesian people that cannot be denied. According
to the Social Minister who is familiarly called Ari, the values of local wisdom are not just
to be spoken but also it must be practiced in daily life. “In my case, there are Batak and
Javanese descendents, so since I was born, I have been called an ‘official’ of the Javanese-
Batak descent, and I married a woman of another ethnic ancestry,” Ari said.

3Actualization and implementation of real values of riflok in the midst of community life
is very important, considering that riflok is able to unite the diversity of cultures,
traditions and customs in the bond of togetherness that respects and respects each
other. Actualization of riflok in daily life is a reflection of the ideology of Pancasila. Pancasila
is the best way to strengthen the national identity from interference and threats from
foreign ideologies. This is in accordance with the direction of the President of the
Republic of Indonesia, Jokowi Widodo. “The president always reminds us that our
ideology is firm in all our policies and behavior. Ideology is the nation unifying, so that
this nation does not become a loser,” said the Minister of Social Affairs.

4Joko Widodo's government is a government that upholds diversity and continues to

encourage riflok values to be preserved and bequeathed to our children and grandchildren.
This effort is made to print our children into a superior generation. The government
cannot do it alone without community support. Therefore, in his direction, the Minister of
Social Affairs invites religious leaders, community leaders, traditional leaders, youth
leaders, and women leaders to strengthen unity and unity in their respective regions. “If
there is anything suspicious, immediately look for the source. There are unusual
movements, they are immediately discussed so that potential conflict areas can be
prevented,” Ari said.

5Inthe same place, Director General of Social Protection and Security, Harry Hikmat said
that in addition to internalizing Pancasila values in daily life, the role of the media
must also be utilized because the influence of social media is currently very large in
people's lives, especially in the younger generation. Along with the cultural shift towards
modernization, more and more challenges to the diversity of diversity faced by this
nation, especially the younger generation.
44
6“Our young generation number 129 million, but what we have to pass on from this country
to them is now experiencing a little degradation,” said Minister of Social Affairs Ari. The
influence of technology and information is currently very massive. Social media and
messaging applications freely enter and influence our young generation. Ari said that at
this time, people are very easily influenced by news that is not necessarily the truth . “We
are entering the Post-Truth era,” said the Minister. Post-Truth is a symptom that is
present with hoaks, obscuring the public from objective facts . Public opinion can be formed
through hoaxes so that young people are now easily influenced by information on social
media that seems right, but not. Therefore, the Minister of Social Affairs strongly urges
caution for the development of the current young generation. “Do you want to go better,
or just like this, or even retreat?” asked Ari.

7Ifyou want a better Indonesia going forward, the Minister of Social Affairs calls for us to
start from ourselves, “Let's start from ourselves. I am Indonesian with Javanese, Batak,
Bugis, Asmat, Ambonese, Sundanese, but the people are Indonesian, not I am Batak,
period. I am a Javanese Indonesian.” There is no country like Indonesia, a country that is
rich in diverse ethnic groups, customs so that it is important and our duty to preserve
culture and maintain national unity.

8Riflok workshop activities, which are still ongoing, according to the Minister of Social
Affairs, are very important in the midst of state life that continues to be challenged. In some
regions, there have been a lot of social conflicts lately which could have been avoided if
respect and acceptance of differences were prioritized.

9Thousands of years ago, even today, the Indonesian people have lived hand in hand. The
warriors, the ancestors have fought to defend the Indonesian state. “Therefore, there is
no other word than to maintain peace and unity of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI)
through the actualization of the values of local wisdom as a mirror of the ideology of
Pancasila,” said Minister of Social Affairs Ari.

Critical Thinking: Responding to a Text

Think about these following questions, and then write your thoughts briefly.
1. In your opinion, is it relevant and necessary for us to preserve our local wisdoms in
this modern era? Why or why not?
2. If you have to introduce one local wisdom to Indonesian youths nowadays, what local
wisdom would you choose, and why?
1. Yes, it was still relevant for us to preserve our local wisdoms in this
modern era because local wisdom could unite the people together and
make the people respect another culture/local wisdom in different place.
2. I will introduce the “bend over” local wisdom. In my opinion, nowadays the
youths was not too polite with the older. Their behaviour become more ugly
and not respect the older.

C. READING AND WRITING SKILLS 6: MAKING QUESTIONS

Watch the Reading and Writing Skills 6 Lecture Video.

Previously, you have learnt several ways that readers can do to interact with a text that they
are reading, namely agreeing and disagreeing and making connections. Another way to
interact with a text is by writing questions as a response to the content of the text. A
good reader is not someone who always understands the text he or she is reading all at
once; there is a possibility that a text might not be understood completely at first read.
For this reason, readers have an opportunity to write down questions when they
encounter unclear information in the text. Readers may also ask questions to further the
discussion in the text, especially if the topic or the information is something that the
reader personally has an interest in.

Readers can write questions by using the 5W-1H questions formula: what, who, when,
where, why and how. By writing down questions as they read, readers will be more prepared
for the post-reading activities. They may seek answers to their own questions about the
text that they just read to enhance understanding of the text, or they may seek further
information to extend their knowledge about specific content in the text. Students can also
use the questions they write while reading as an initial idea for doing their assignment.
