CHAPTER 4

Conclusions and Recommendations

This study was conducted for the purpose of testing the effectiveness of

Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning as teaching strategy in improving the

learning in photosynthesis of the NS2 students of the Catholic institution. The

findings were as follows.

Based on the post-test scores of the students in the control and

experimental group, the mean score of the experimental group is higher than the

mean score of the control group. The significance value computed from the

gathered data indicates that there was a significant difference in the results

between the two groups.

The difficulty of learning photosynthesis experienced by the students in

the control group had been addressed by Process Oriented Guided Inquiry

Learning. There is a difference in the percentage of students who passed

between the experimental and control group.

Conclusion

From the findings that there are more students in the experimental group

who passed the post-test than the control group, POGIL decreases student

difficulty in the complex topic Photosynthesis. The three stages of POGIL which

include exploration, concept invention and application that the students had gone

through are considered possible reasons of such decrease. POGIL enhances the
25

analytical and critical thinking skills of the students through the design of the

activities.

Recommendations

Based on the results of the study, the recommendations can be

summarized as follows.

Biology teachers in the Catholic institution are recommended to include,

as teaching strategy, the use of Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning.

POGIL should be integrated within the existent teaching methods.

The School of Teacher Education of the Catholic institution is suggested

to conduct seminars, lectures and training for Science instructors on how to

facilitate a POGIL classroom. Teachers should be trained in using POGIL as

teaching methods to be used in the classroom. POGIL seminars and lectures

could also be catered to Education students especially to Biological Science

majors. The Catholic institution is encouraged to support the implementation of

POGIL and the corresponding seminars and lectures. The students should be

involved in group activities inside the classroom. Students should also conduct

further studies on the effectiveness of Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning

as teaching method.
