Blood banking is the method that takes place in a hospital to ensure that donated blood or blood products are

sterile
before they are used in blood transfusions and other medical processes such as typing the blood for transfusion and
checking for infectious diseases.

In 2003, the World Health Organization proposed that the Philippines' blood banking system be centralized. The WHO
expert recommended that the government follow WHO plans for blood transfusion services (BTS). This approach
included the development of national policies, the development of transfusion policy and plans, and the national
coordination of the blood transfusion services system. This consolidated blood testing and sorting, as well as established
the functions and responsibilities of BTS and national health authorities. Following the adoption of these strategies, only
designated blood centers would be able to handle blood testing and sorting. Blood donation services have been
integrated. Despite the centralization of blood supplies, three agencies, the Department of Health (DOH), the Philippines
Red Cross (PRC), and the Philippine Blood Coordinating Council (PBCC), will collaborate to ensure the nation's safe blood
supply. The National Voluntary Blood Services Network (NVBSP) encourages young people to participate in the blood
donation program and help save the lives of millions of Filipinos.
