Academic Year 2020/2021

Module: Advanced Mathematics

Module Code: BEA/5/415
Date: Thursday 27 May 2021
Time: Paper available at 2.00 PM
Time Allowed: 6 hours for all students including DDS
Instructions to Candidates

THIS IS AN OPEN BOOK ASSESSMENT

1. Download the question paper;

2. Download the exam front cover sheet and fill in the information;
3. Using lined A4 paper, state the question number on the left-hand side and include the page number;
4. Scan the answer using a mobile app or a scanner. Adobe Scan App is recommended; please see the
attached instruction on how to use the app;
5. Upload as one single PDF document (with the cover sheet) in this submission point on Moodle before
the deadline at 8.00 PM (London Time).

Please, write your ID on the exam paper as requested.

Answer all questions proposed. All questions carry equal marks.

Important Notes

1. Candidate must complete the front cover sheet and include the cover in the final scanned document;
2. Candidate must NOT communicate electronically or verbally with anyone during the examination;
3. Candidate must complete the answer book in clear handwriting – any word processing software is NOT
permitted;
4. Use black/blue ink pen to ensure that it can be scanned clearly. Begin each question on a new page;
5. The candidate is allowed to use any lined paper – questions answered must be noted on the left-hand
side and each page must include the page number;
6. Candidate must scan the answers in the correct order using a mobile phone app or a scanner;
7. The scanned answer sheets must be combined into one single PDF document, it must be uploaded on
Moodle before the stated deadline, and FAILURE to do so will result in zero marks.
Question 1 – 20 marks

a) Write the vector (11,-4) as a linear combination of the orthonormal eigenvectors of A:

1 −6
𝐀𝐀 =
−6 6
[15 marks]

b) Determine the unique solution of the following first-order ordinary differential equation
subject to the boundary condition provided:
d𝑥𝑥
3 + 15𝑥𝑥 = 0, 𝑥𝑥(0) = 16
d𝑡𝑡
[5 marks]

Question 2 – 20 marks

Consider the scalar field:

𝜙𝜙(𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦, 𝑧𝑧) = 𝑒𝑒 −2𝑥𝑥 sin(2𝑦𝑦 − 3𝑧𝑧)

Determine:

a) ∇𝜙𝜙 [5 marks]

b) ∇2 𝜙𝜙 [5 marks]

c) The curl of the gradient vector, curl (∇𝜙𝜙), showing full calculations. How would you describe
the gradient vector field based on this result?
[7 marks]

d) What does the gradient vector indicate about a scalar field?

[3 marks]

Question 3 – 20 marks

a) If it is known that the stationary points of the following function are (2/3, 8/3) and (10, 40),
classify both of them.

F(x,y) = x3 – 8xy + y2 + 20x + 42

[7 marks]

b) Solve the following differential equation using Laplace transforms subject to the boundary
conditions given, explaining in words the process involved.
N.B.: attempts without a written explanation will not be awarded any marks.

𝑑𝑑2 𝑦𝑦 d𝑦𝑦
2
− 10 + 24𝑦𝑦 = 0, 𝑦𝑦(0) = −1, 𝑦𝑦 ′ (0) = 4
𝑑𝑑𝑥𝑥 d𝑥𝑥
[13 marks]
Question 4 – 20 marks

Determine the radius r and height h of the right circular cone with the smallest curved surface area,
i.e., not including its base, that contains a fixed volume V. Note that the volume of such a cone is
πr2h/3, while the surface area of the curved surface is πrl, where l is the slant height shown in Figure
Q4 below.

N.B.: You must provide a written explanation of the process involved; submissions without a
written explanation will not be awarded any marks.

Figure Q4: Right circular cone.

Question 5 – 20 marks

A population of survey participants has a mean mass of X with a standard deviation of σx, and a mean
height of Y with a standard deviation of σy. NOTE: each student is provided specific values of X,
σx, Y and σy – please see the attached table at the end of the paper.

a) What is the probability of a participant chosen at random having a mass between 60 kg and 70
kg?
[8 marks]

b) What is the 98th percentile height?

[6 marks]

c) A sample of 12 participants are found to have an average height of 175.2 cm with a sample
standard deviation of 8.9 cm. Determine if this average height is greater than the population
mean at a 5% level of significance.
[6 marks]
