Introduction:

Literature is defined as a story of life translated to different literary forms either prose or
poetry. One writer hyperbolically defined literature as the second most interesting subject next to
theology, the study of the nature of God, literature being said to be the study of the story of
human beings from all walks of life.

Appreciation of the writings in Philippine Literature depends upon how well students
read from texts and study these writings in terms of the nature and characteristics of literature as
a field of study. In the end, students are expected to gather materials written mostly in
anonymous form by Filipino authors and study their significance to the life of the Filipino in
terms of their culture and tradition.

I. ENGAGE

Literature is from the Latin word “Litera” which means letter. Thus in the study of the life of
people all over the world regardless of their creed, ideology or social status, it involves pieces of
writings which speaks about the differences of culture, traditions and their way of life. This gives
the readers a glimpse of the world they live in. Philippine Literature is also among those pieces
of works that would show a glimpse of the life of the people in this part of the world.
