The fact that Availability of a system is the ratio of the system up time and the total functional period of the system, it is
therefore a function of the average time a system will run before failures occur (MTBF) and the average time a failed
system will be repaired after it has failed (MTTR). Assuming that an Engineering firm has a bottling machine used for
the production of bottles and the MTBF and MTTR conditions are assumed in the chart below to determine the
machine’s availability to the Engineering firm for the different conditions.

Conditions of MTBF Conditions on MTTR Availability

Low Low Low
Low High Low
High Low High
High High Intermediate

Analysis to determining the availability of the Bottling Machine from the table above.

Case 1: with LOW MTBF and LOW MTTR of the machine, it simply means that, the Bottling Machine has a very short
failure rate and a very short repair rate, in this case, the Availability of the Bottling Machine to the Engineering Firm
will be LOW which is an undesirable condition of the Bottling machine.

Case 2: with LOW MTBF and a HIGH MTTR of the machine, means that, the machine fails frequently which leads to a
shorter failure rate and when it fails, it takes a very long time to repair. This off course, will lead to a very LOW
availability of the machine to the firm and this is an undesirable condition (worse than case 1).

Case 3: HIGH MTBF and LOW MTTR, it means that, the Bottling machine will take a very long time to fail and when
it fails, it will take a very short time to repair. This condition will lead to a very HIGH availability which is desirable.

Case 4: HIGH MTBF and HIGH MTTR, means that, the Bottling machine will take a long time to fail, and when it
does, it will take a very long time to repair. This condition is somehow leads to an intermediate availability rate (better
than case two).

From the above, we see that the Bottling machine operating condition for the Engineering Firm in the production of
Bottles is best in case 3 than the three cases and it is worst in case 2 than all the other cases.
