Topic: Elaborate on the benefits of weightlifting.


General Purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform my class about the upsides of weightlifting
Central idea: I want to share about what are the benefits, the different forms of
weightlifting, and how to lift weights safely.

Introduction

Attention-Getter: How many of you would like to accomplish your daily chores faster
and with less stain on your body?
Relevance to Audience: Moving, lifting, and work in general are a requirement for being
alive. Through weightlifting anyone can not only become healthier, but stronger as well
in their daily habits and chores.
Credibility material: I have personally seen and felt the difference that comes through
weightlifting. Lifting as little as twice a week can have a tremendous impact on your
week.
Preview of Speech: Weightlifting if done safely and wisely can greatly improve your
physical well-being. The three questions to answer are what are the benefits? What are
the different forms of resistance training available? And finally what are ways to be safe
when exercising in a gym?

Link: Now that I have told you about what I will discuss, let me tell you about the
benefits of weightlifting.

Body
I. Weightlifting gives you an upper hand in multiple areas of life.
A. Weightlifting helps your body in many ways
1. Resistance training strengthens your bones.
2. Resistance training improves cardiovascular health
3. From exerting all the energy you sleep better at night.
B. According to a University of Wisconsin study, people that performed a
whole body workout at least three times a week, elevated their metabolism for
39hrs following the workout, meaning more weight loss.

Link: Now that I have told you about the benefits of weightlifting, let me tell you about
other forms of weight training.

II. It’s good to experiment with other forms of resistance training to discover
their benefits.
A. There are many different variations that one can use to better achieve ones
workout goals.
1. By lifting heavier, with fewer reps you can focus more on
strength
2. Change your lifting tempo to fatigue the muscle more.
3. Use different grips with the bar or dumbbell to change the effect
on ones body.
B. There are other tools you can use in weightlifting.
1. One can use the very effective barbell and free weights
2. Use the machines such as the leg extension, and leg press.
3. One can experiment and learn how to use kettle bells, which are
similar to dumbbells except the weight, is off center.
4. Resistance bands are a relatively cheap way to get a good
workout with little time and little space.

Link: Now that I have told you about the variety of forms of resistance training, let me
tell you about ways to be safe when lifting weights.
III. When lifting weights it’s extremely important to follow the rules.

A. Protect yourself when you workout


1. When lifting wear a lifting belt, to protect your back
2. Have a workout partner who can spot you.
B. Don’t lift consecutive days in a row, because it does not give your body
adequate time to recover.
C. Always breathe when exerting effort during the lift.
D. Know your limits; do not lift to heavy to soon.

Conclusion:

Summary Statement: Weightlifting is a great form of exercise that is invaluable to


anyone in any point of their life. It improves our health, reduces stress and teaches us
about ourselves.
