Solving the challenge: To Delay or Not to Delay

In the article To delay or Not to Delay there’s this one dilemma where you are being
asked by your vice president to postpone your presentation about the employee attitude survey
because her boss will be coming unannounced and to the fact that their relationship is not that
great for some reason. These are the possible solutions that you can choose from. First is to
continue and deliver the presentation as planned but doing this might put your vice president in
bad terms with her boss. Second is to continue in delivering the presentation but discussing only
the positive side of the survey but it would be fishy by only stating the positive side and not
tackling the negative results of the survey that might lead to a new problem for you and your
boss. Third is make an alibi that your spouse had an accident and will be rescheduling the
presentation, this alibi will affect your integrity as an employee of the company especially the
higher up’s will be there. Lastly is to create other options.

In this situation I will deliver the presentation as planned although the results will not be
beneficial to the vice president. This job is entrusted upon me and doing this will help in
achieving greater goals for the company and its employee. It’s not about disregarding the
relationship I had with my vice president, it’s about being effective and efficient employee for
the company, so if it benefits the mass, I will choose that. According to Phillipa Foot in one of
Trolley problem, “If a doctor can save five people from death by killing one healthy person and
using that person’s organs for life-saving transplants, then the greater good theory implies that the
doctor should kill the one person to save five.”. Although in this situation it’s not about life and
death and we should base on facts and practical decisions. If my vice president really trusted me
in this situation, she will respect my decision in pursuing the presentation as planned.

Although, if I choose the final options in this scenario for the sake of the vice president
but in the long run, they will find ways on firing her in the company, so the best thing to do is not
to make the same mistake as my vice president leading on that kind of relationship with the
higher boss.
