Chapter (1)
Introduction
1.1 What is mechatronics?

Mechatronics basically refers to mechanical

electronic systems and normally described as a
synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic,
computer and control systems which, when
combined, make possible the generation of simple,
more economic, and reliable systems.
The term "mechatronics" was first assigned by
Mr. Tetsuro Mori, a senior engineer of the
Japanese company Yaskawa, in 1969.
1) Mechanical: 3) Control:
- Thermal or fluid systems - Classical control theory
- Solid mechanics - Modern control theory
- Dynamics and vibrations

2) Electrical: 4) Computer:
- Sensors and actuators - Design computation
- Power systems - Microprocessor integration
- Communication systems
Mechatronics rethinks the traditional design
sequence.

Integrating design and control is a relatively new

approach to create new products and processes
(smart designs).
Mechatronics, which is of a Japanese origin
(1970’s), is used to develop products, processes,
and systems with greater flexibility, ease in
redesign and ability of reprogramming.
Mechatronics can also be termed as replacement
of mechanics with electronics or enhance
mechanics with electronics. For example, in
modern automobiles, mechanical fuel injection
systems are now replaced with electronic fuel
injection systems. This replacement made the
automobiles more efficient and less pollutant.
With the help of microelectronics and sensor
technology, mechatronics systems are providing
high levels of precision and reliability. It is now
possible to move (in x – y plane) the work table
of a modern production machine tool in a step of
0.0001 mm.
By employment of reprogrammable
microcontrollers or microcomputers, it is now
easy to add new functions and capabilities to a
product or a system. Today’s domestic washing
machines are “intelligent” and four-wheel
passenger automobiles are equipped with safety
installations such as air-bags, parking
(proximity) sensors, anti-theft electronic keys etc.
1.2 What is the main components of mechatronic
system?

Physically, a mechatronic system is composed of

four prime components. They are sensors,
actuators, controllers and mechanical
components. The following figure shows a
schematic diagram of a mechatronic system
integrated with all the above components.
1.3 Computing platform (Microcontroller)
Arduino Uno-R3 USB, (Not the only one)
Microcontroller module
1) ATmega 328 (32 kB memory)
2) 14 Digital I/O (6 PMW output)
3) 6 Analog inputs
4) Regulated 5 V and 3.3 V output
5) Three power options:
- USB
- Wall adapter
- Vin / GND pin between 7-12 V
6) Tx/Rx serial communication
7) Removable ATmega 328 chip
