Solve Linear Systems by Elimination

OBJECTIVES:
• Solve systems of equations by using the elimination method.

SUGGESTED PRACTICE:
• To Be Announced/Posted.
PREVIOUSLY
• You solved systems of linear equations by
Substitution.

NOW
• You are going to solve systems of linear equations by
elimination.

NEXT
• Solve Systems of Linear Inequalities.
VOCABULARY
• Least Common Multiple (LCM)
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
• Add and subtract like terms.

• Find the LCM of two integers.

WARM-UP
1. Given: So, when adding or
𝑥=9 subtracting the left sides
and of the two equations, we
𝑦=5 add or subtract
(respectively) the right
a) Find 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 14
sides of the two equations.
b) Find 𝑥 − 𝑦 = 4

2. Determine the Least Common Multiple for:

a) 2 and 5: 𝟏𝟎
b) 2 and 6: 𝟔
c) 5 and 6: 𝟑𝟎
d) 5 and 9: 𝟒𝟓
e) 6 and 9: 𝟏𝟖
LEARN: Solve a Linear System by Elimination

Follow these steps:

• Step 1: Put both equations in Standard Form. (No fractions
nor decimals)
• Step 2: Multiply one or both equations by the necessary
constant(s) to obtain opposite (LCM) coefficients for one of
the variables.
• Step 3: Add both equations to eliminate one variable, and then
solve for the remaining variable.
• Step 4: Substitute the variable found in step 3 into one of
the original equations to solve for the “eliminated” variable.
