Graphing Quadratic

Inequalities
Example 1. y 2
>x +3x -4
Step 1.Graph y=x2 +3x – 4.Because the
inequality symbol is > ,make the parabola dashed or
broken line.
Step 2.Test a point inside the parabola
such as (0,0).
y>x2+3x -4
0>0 +0 -4
0>-4 true so (0,0) is part of the solution.
Step 3.Shade the region inside the parabola where (0,0)

located.
Step 4.Graph y>x2 +3x – 4.

PARABOLA of y>x2 +3x -4

Example 2. y < 2
x -3x -10
Step 1.Graph y= x2 -3x – 10.Because the
inequality symbol is < ,make the parabola dashed.
Step 2.Test a point inside the parabola
such as (0,0).
y<x2-3x -10
0<0 +0 -10
0<-10 false so (0,0) is not part of the solution.
Step 3.Shade the region outside the parabola where

(0,0) not located.

Solid line ≤ 𝒐𝒓 ≥
If the absolute value of the coefficient
of a > 1, the parabola is skinny.
Example: y > -4x2

If the absolute value of the coefficient of

a < 1,the parabola
is wide.
𝟏
Example : y < x2
𝟒

If the coefficient of a=1,the parabola is

not skinny and not wide.
