Aggressive Driving Should be Avoided

(1)Aggressive driving is a phenomenon, which has only recently got the public worried.
(2)The National Highway Traffic Safety Council (NHTSC) defines aggressive driving as
“the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger
persons or property”. (3)Actions such as running red lights, improper passing,
overtaking on the left, improper lane change, failing to yield, improper turns, running
stop signs, tailgaiting, careless driving and speeding are examples of aggressive
driving.. (4)Such actions are dangerous to other road users. (5)Aggressive driving
should be avoided because it causes crashes, injuries and fatalities.

(6)The first reason why aggressive driving should be avoided is it causes
crashes. (7)According to NHTSC between 78 percent (excessive speed) and 100
percent (improper passing) of the cases of aggressive driving resulted in traffic crashes
and 96 percent of the drivers cited for “following too closely” or tailgaitng caused
crashes as a result of their aggressive driving. (8)Moreover, “running red light”,
“improper passing”, and “overtaking on the left” topped other categories of aggressive
driving in contributing to traffic crashes.

(9)Another reason why aggressive driving should be avoided is it causes

injuries.(10) NHTSC states that the percentages of the injuries caused by aggressive
driving are, in almost all categories of aggressive driving, above 100 percent.
(11)Furthermore, the Department of Highway Safety (DHS) reports that this is due to
the fact that each motor vehicle crash accounts for one or more injuries. (12) It was
found that of the ten categories of aggressive driving, “running red light”, “failing to
yield”, and “running stop signs” are the most serious factors contributing to injuries.

(13)Yet another reason why aggressive driving should be avoided is it causes
fatalities. (14)”Overtaking on the left” appears to be the most important contributing
factor in traffic fatalities as it relates to aggressive driving. (15) “Improper lane change”,
“running stop sign” and “running red light” rank second through four in terms of their
contribution to traffic fatalities (DHS, 2008).

(16)The above evidence shows that aggressive driving causes crashes, injuries
and fatalities. (17) Hence, aggressive driving should be avoided. (18)Since the opening
of the North-South Highway, the number of kilometers of roads in the country has
increased by one percent while the number of vehicle miles driven has increased by 35
percent. (19) More cars and more drivers are also on the road, leading to more
aggressive drivers.

up the point rather than dealing with mere thoughts and feelings.
 Now how do we write an argumentative essay.
 All you have to do is to follow the structure, what is it again ( enumerate)
 For you to know what to write on each part, let us discuss each ones content.
 Let start with the inroduction, what do you write an introduction?
 First is the introductory paragraph wherein it inroduces the problem and gives the background
information needed for the argument and thesis statement.
 You must hook the readers interest imediately, do not assumed that your audience is already
familiar with your topic.
 That’s right, the thesis statement is your claim as the writer, it is also the second part of an
argumentative essay
 It is also called as the authors claim which is your opinion or p[osition in an issue
 It is part of an introduction.
 Lets study this example
 Aggressive Driving Should be Avoided
 (1)Aggressive driving is a phenomenon, which has only recently got the public
worried. (2)The National Highway Traffic Safety Council (NHTSC) defines
aggressive driving as “the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that
endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property”. (3)Actions such as
running red lights, improper passing, overtaking on the left, improper lane
change, failing to yield, improper turns, running stop signs, tailgaiting, careless
driving and speeding are examples of aggressive driving.. (4)Such actions are
dangerous to other road users. (5)Aggressive driving should be avoided because
it causes crashes, injuries and fatalities.
 What do you think is the thesis statement?
 Aggressive driving should be avoided because it causes crashes, injuries and
fatalities.
 Is our thesis statement because it contains the stand of the author.
 If you notice in the introductory paragraph, it talks about the background and definition of
aggressive driving which is thAggressive driving should be avoided because it causes
crashes, injuries and fatalities.
 e main topic of the essay, then it is imediately followed by the author’s claim which is the stand
of the author on the topic.remember don’t explain all your evidence in the opening but do make
a strong stand and make it clear what you are discussing.
 Easy,right?
 Let’s move on to the third part which is the body of the essay.it contains the reasons that you
use to support your thesis, the reasons are included in the thesis statement and are supported
with evidences, facts, statistics, personal experiences,or research.these will be the backbone of
your arguments, remember each reason will be included in one paragraph, listen to this
example for better understanding.
 First part of the body
6)The first reason why aggressive driving should be avoided is it causes crashes.
(7)According to NHTSC between 78 percent (excessive speed) and 100 percent
(improper passing) of the cases of aggressive driving resulted in traffic crashes

 Second part of the body

(9)Another reason why aggressive driving should be avoided is it causes injuries.

(10) NHTSC states that the percentages of the injuries caused by aggressive
driving are, in almost all categories of aggressive driving, above 100 percent

 Third part of the body.

aggressive driving should be avoided is it causes fatalities. (14)”Overtaking on

the left” appears to be the most important contributing factor in traffic fatalities as
it relates to aggressive driving.
 There you go, did you listen well?
 Let’s see, what are the 3 effects of aggressive driving?
 That’s great, they are crashes, injuries, and fatalities, you really listened well.If you have noticed,
these 3 effects mentioned are also mentioned in the thesis statement which is found in the
introduction.to remind you, our thesis statement again is,
Aggressive driving should be avoided because it causes crashes, injuries and
fatalities.
Therefore the effects were only elaboarated in each paragraph supported by
facts and research.
 Are you still with me, grade 10?
 Let’s move on to the last 3 parts of argumentative essay, they are the counter claim, rebattle and conclusion.
 To a basic essay, this 3 parts are only called the conclusion.why? because it is a paragraph that restate your
thesis and sumarizes the arguments you made in your body paragraph, rather than introducing new facts or
more arguments, a good conclusion will apeal to the audience emotions, so why is there a need for a
counter claim?
 Yah right, it is because your reader might bring up something to disagree with your p;osition, then this will
serve as your claim or reason, after which the rebattle immediately follows the counterclaim , this is your
response to the counter claim, this negates or disagree to the counter claimgiven, in this part you should
have the last word by giving a concrete part of evidence to strenthen your claim. To make it a lot simpler the
counter claim and the rebattle are both parts of the conclusion.
 Can you still follow?
 Marvelous!
 Here’s the example of the last 3 parts.
 (16)The above evidence shows that aggressive driving causes crashes, injuries
and fatalities. (17) Hence, aggressive driving should be avoided. (18)Since the
opening of the North-South Highway, the number of kilometers of roads in the
country has increased by one percent while the number of vehicle miles driven
has increased by 35 percent. (19) More cars and more drivers are also on the
road, leading to more aggressive drivers.
 And that’s it, those are the parts or structure of argumentative essay.just follow the structure and nothing will
go wrong.
 This time since you already know what to write in each part, I also want you to use of the language features
of an argumentative text . I know you have gone through this topicm so it will be a lot easier for you. What
are these again?
 They are the uses of modals like, should, must, may , might, will, and more
 #2 the use of conjunctions or connectives such as because, although, on the other hand , therefore, in order
that, and as much as, etc.
 And number 3, the use of implicit and explicit language, and we are almost done with the discussion
 Ok, before we proceed on your output for today, let me give you some key tips in writing your argumentative
