Problems:

1. Ten liters of 25% salt solution and 15 liters of 35% salt solution are poured into a
drum originally containing 30 liters of 10% salt solution. What is the percent
concentration in the mixture? Ans. 19.55%

GIVEN: req’d:
10 L of 25% salt solution % concentration in the mixture
15 L of 35% salt solution
30 L of 10% salt solution

SOLUTION:
Let a = 0.25
b = 0.35
c = 0.10
d = % concentration of a, b, and c

Total Volume of Mixture = (10 + 15 + 30)L

Total Volume of Mixture = 55 L

10a + 15b + 30c = 55d

10(0.25) + 15(0.35) + 30(0.10)= 55d
10(0.25) + 15(0.35) + 30(0.30) 2.5 + 5.25 + 3 10.75
d= (100%) = (100%) = (100%)
55 55 55
d = 19.5455%

answer:
d = 19.5455%
2. You walked to town at 4 miles per hour and returned home on the bus, which
traveled 40 miles per hour. If the round trip took 1 hour and 15 minutes, how far
did you walk? Ans. 4.54 miles

GIVEN: req’d:
walked at 4 mph distance walked at 4 mph
rode bus back at 40 mph
t = 1 hr and 15 minutes = 1.25 hours

SOLUTION:
t1 + t2 = 1.25 hrs
d
From the formula: v=
t
where: v = velocity
d = distance
t = time

d d
Therefore, + =t
vwalk vbus
d d
(40 mph) [ + ] = [1.25 hrs](40 mph)
4 mph 40 mph
10d + d = 1.25(40)miles
11d = 50 miles
50
d = miles = 4.5455 miles
11

answer:
d = 4.5455 miles
3. John sold a watch for P350 at a loss of 30% in the cost price. Find the
corresponding loss or gain in % if he had sold it for P505. Ans. 1% gain

GIVEN: req’d:
Selling Price = P350 loss or gain %
Lost 30% for selling
New Selling Price = P505

SOLUTION:
Let x = original price of the watch
Therefore,
x(1 - 0.3) = P350
P350
x= = P500
0.7

Let y = percentage
P500(x) = P505
P505
y= = 1.01 = 101%
P500

To get the total %loss(-) or %gain(+): y - 100 = % gain or loss

101% - 100% = 1% gain

answer:
1% gain
1 2 3
4. Evaluate the determinant: 2 -1 4 Ans. 12
-1 -1 -5
GIVEN: req’d:
1 2 3
2 -1 4 determinant
-1 -1 -5

SOLUTION:
1 2 3
2 -1 4
-1 -1 -5

-1 4 2 4 2 -1
=1∙ | | -2∙ | | +3∙ | |
-1 -5 -1 -5 -1 -1
= 1(5 + 4) - 2(-10 + 4) + 3( -2 - 1)
= 1(9) - 2(-6) + 3(-3)
= 9 + 12 - 9
= 12

answer:
12
