IV. Learning Task

According to Philippine Constitution of 1973, what are the duties and obligations of a
Filipino citizen? List down the duties and obligations and write your interpretation. 3-5
sentences each.

ARTICLE V

DUTIES AND OBLIGATIONS OF CITIZENS

Section 1. It shall be the duty of the citizen to be loyal to the Republic and to honor the
Philippine flag, to defend the State and contribute to its development and welfare, to
uphold the Constitution and obey the laws, and to cooperate with the duly constituted
authorities in the attainment and preservation of a just and orderly society.

Interpretation (4 sentences): As an individual, I do believe that the main interpretation of


Section 1 of Article V, is, the essence of one’s patriotism, nationalism, and loyalty to our
country. Which entails the importance of values, respect, and benevolence of us, the citizen of it.
Furthermore, it also gives emphasis on generating crucial action of cooperation, promoting social
orders/principles, and control, in the everyday basis and lives. Overall, it primarily highlights the
main principles, of humanity, in which it serves importance and benefits everybody, which
teaches us the essence of our rights as well as our loyalty, and dedication to our country.

Section 2. The rights of the individual impose upon him the correlative duty to exercise
them responsibly and with due regard for the rights of others.

Interpretation (4 sentences): The said section pertains to the principles and idea of expressing
one’s rights. This explains that all of us have access to exercise and express our rights, in our
society and in our daily life. In addition, it also indicates, that our rights are granted to us, and
they cannot be removed by somebody or someone. Overall, in this section under Article V, it
explains that our right serves as the representation and manifestation of ourselves, in which no
one can dictate to remove or eradicate, since rights are rights, and rights are the same in our
lives, in which must be protected as well as safe.
Section 3. It shall be the duty of every citizen to engage in gainful work to assure himself
and his family a life worthy of human dignity.

Interpretation (5 sentences): This section, explains that every citizen is required to attain
beneficial work, to be able for them to sustain and have standard well-being. In addition, it also
emphasizes, that attaining a certain job will execute significance for citizens to have a better life,
and society to live within. In summary, Section 3 of Article V, basically discusses the importance
of necessary works, which serve as a key to living and gaining a life of worth. A life that
signifies dignity, with response to fulfill our certain duties and responsibilities, not just for
ourselves but as well as in family. It represents the essence of having quality living with
connection with jobs and opportunities that will serve as a pathway towards enhancement of life
and living.

Section 4. It shall be the obligation of every citizen qualified to vote to register and cast
his vote.

Interpretation (4 sentences): In this section, the right for suffrage is being highlighted, which
explains that as a citizen it is our requirement to cast our votes for a certain deserving candidate,
which is capable of ruling and leading. As an individual, I also believe, that voting is not just a
practice of our respective rights and voices as a citizen, but it is also served as a manifestation of
our character and influence. It serves as an obligation, that speaks and taught us to choose a
certain leader that has the character, virtue, honesty, loyalty, and attributes of a leader, a leader
that serves and speaks through his/her constituents with integrity and moral principles. In
summary, section 4 of Article 5, it gives focuses on the right of every individual to choose a
respective candidate together with the right for them to register, giving them a voice, to stand for
the truth, nothing but the truth.
