From the figure,
Analog voltage (Vin) is applied to non inverting
terminals of all comparators ( The op-amp which is
operates in open circuit known as comparator) using a
single line. Reference voltage (Vref) is applied to
inverting terminals of comparators using divider circuit
(With the help of voltage division rule, we calculated
voltages at each inverting terminal of op-amp as
shown in figure).
Each comparator produces digital output in the form
of 1 or 0. If analog voltage (Vin) is greater than
reference voltage (V at negative terminal of op-amp)
comparator produces high logic i.e. 1. If analog
voltage is less than reference voltage then
comparator produces low logic i.e. O.
Thus all parallel comparator produces digital
representation of analog voltage in the form of zeros
and ones. These outputs of comparator are then
applied to the priority encoder. Encoder converts
those zeros and once into binary number and
produces digital binary output.
Advantages:
- Simple and very fast (fastest)
- Speed is only limited by gate and comparator
propogation delay
Disadvantages:
- Expensive
- Prone to produce glitches in the output
- Each additional bit of resolution requires twice the
comparators.
