Hypothesis Testing About the Population Mean

Name: ________________________________________Section: ____________________

Directions: Read and analyze the problems below. To test hypothesis about the
population mean, follow these steps:

Step 1: State the null and alternative hypothesis.

Step 2: Enumerate the given. (Note: If a parameter is computed from the given, show
your solution on how you obtained it.)
Step 3: Determine if the problem requires a z-test or a t-test. Justify your answer.
Step 4: Compute the test-statistic value.
Step 5: Determine the critical value.
Step 6: Visualize the curve to determine the position of the critical values, rejection
region, and your computed test-statistic.
Step 7: Make your decision.
Step 8: Make your conclusion.

1. The Head of the Mathematics Department announced that the mean score of Grade 9
students in the first periodic examination in Mathematics was 89 and the standard deviation
was 12. One student, who believed that the mean score was less than this, randomly
selected 34 students and computed their mean score. She obtained a mean score of 85. At
0.01 level of significance, test the student’s belief.

2. A History teacher claims that the average height of Filipino males is 163 cm. A student
taking up Statistics randomly selects 20 Filipino males and measures their heights. Their
heights in cm are shown below.

163 164 165 177

167 163 159 169
159 160 163 163
165 169 163 165
162 174 163 167

Do the collected data present sufficient evidence to indicate that the average height of
Filipino males is different from 163 cm? Use 0.05 level of significance and assume that the
population follows a normal distribution.
