Tokyo wins bid to host 2020 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee has chosen

Tokyo to host the 2020 Summer Games. Tokyo beat
out two other contenders: Madrid, Spain and Istanbul,
Turkey. Tokyo, which had previously hosted the
Summer Games in 1964, was seen as a safe choice
when compared with the other two cities. Madrid's big
drawback was likely Spain's current economic crisis,
with about a 25% unemployment rate for adults.
Turkey's bid may have been hurt because the country
shares a border with Syria, which is currently engulfed
in a brutal civil war. Also, Istanbul experienced unrest
this year when protestors trying to save an urban park
tussled with city police. Turkey would have been the
first Muslim country to host the Games, and with a
median age of less than 30 years, one of the youngest.

 Madam Dear Resigns as MP, PPRP Member

BANGKOK, Aug 16 (TNA) – Watanya Bunnag resigned as a House

representative and a member of the coalition-core Palang Pracharath Party
to protest against other representatives and senators who dumped a list MP
election amendment bill.Miss Watanya aka Madam Dear said she met PPRP
leader and Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon this morning to inform
him of her resignation decision. She said that she had done her duties well
and always attended parliamentary sessions but people complained that the
sessions had collapsed for weeks. Miss Watanya said that members of the
parliament should have attended the latest session to vote for their favorite
calculation method for the election of party list MPs instead of being absent
from the vote She commented that she would like to vote for a two-ballot
electoral system and the list MP calculation method in which the number of
all list MP votes will be divided by 100 to find the minimum votes for a
political party to win a list MP seat. The latest parliamentary session of House
representatives and senators on Aug 15 lacked its quorum when they were
about to vote on the amendment bill on the election of list MPs which would
use the 500 divisor. Consequently the parliament returned to the calculation

 Former basketball star on return trip to North Korea

Flamboyant former U.S. basketball star Dennis Rodman will

travel to Pyongyang in North Korea for a five-day visit, his
second trip this year to the reclusive Asian country. Rodman
last traveled to Pyongyang in March to meet with leader
North Korea leader Kim Jong-un. Kim is a basketball fan and
appeared to get along well with Rodman on the earlier visit,
with the two of them pictured laughing, eating and drinking
together and watching an all-star basketball game. Some
had speculated that Rodman was returning to North Korea to
help secure the release of Kenneth Bae, an American
missionary who was recently sentenced to 15 years of hard
labour for plotting to overthrow the state. However, Rodman
said his trip was just "another basketball diplomacy tour."

In recent advertising and marketing campaigns, the government has

pursued categories of tourists, such as Muslims, Israelis and gays, that
are shunned in some neighboring countries. It is the only Asian country
that has a government-sponsored campaign aimed at gay and lesbian
travelers. It is also marketing itself to Muslims as a place with abundant
choices of Halal restaurants and many prayer rooms in public places such
as shopping malls. Also, while Malaysia and Indonesia, both Muslim-
majority countries, bar Israelis from visiting for political reasons, Thailand
has long been one of the most popular destinations for Israeli travelers,
with 120,000 Israelis visiting the country in 2012. “We live in a country
that is open and pretty liberal — I can’t think of a market that we wouldn’t
welcome,” said Wisoot Buachoom, the director of the Tourism Authority of
Thailand’s office in Chiang Mai.

Game of Thrones Season 7 premiere brings record ratings

Last Sunday’s season premiere of “Game of Thrones” was watched

by 16.1 million viewers across all platforms, including cable, online
streaming and on-demand viewing. This is a 50 percent increase from
last year’s Season 6 kickoff episode. The episode was the most-watched
premiere ever for both “Game of Thrones” and HBO. The Season 7
premiere was arguably the most hotly anticipated episode in the show’s
history, coming after a longer-than-usual hiatus between seasons. In
years past, “Game of Thrones” seasons have debuted in April, but this
season required a longer production period. The show now has 12
episodes remaining - six more this season, and a final six in Season 8.
