I. Subject : WHO, WHICH, THAT

Using :

Who : used for people

Which : used for things

That : used for people and things

Example :

a. The girl is happy who won the race


b. The book which on the table is mine
c. The students is from china that sits next to me

II. Subject : WHO(M), WHICH, THAT

Using :

Whom(m) : especially in speaking in very formal English

Which : used for things

That : used for things and people

Example :

a. The man who(m) I saw was Mr. Jones


b. The movie which we saw last night wasn’t very good
c. The book that I read it was good

If the preposition come at the beginning of the adjective only whom o which may be used

A preposition is never immediately followed by that or who

Example :

a. She is the woman who(m) I told you about


b. The music which we listened to last night was good
c. The man I talked to him yesterday that was very kind

III. Subject whose

Whose is used to shoe possession (possessive prounouns)

Whose is connected to a noun ( whose + noun)


Example :

a. I know the man


His bicycle was stolen -> I know the man whose bicycle was stolen
b. Mr. catt has a tape recorder whose price is expensive

IV. Subject WHERE

Where is used in adj cl to modify place(city, country, room, house)

If where is used, a preposition is not included in the adj cl

If where is not included the pre must be included

Example :

The building is very old

He lives there(in the building)

a. The building where he lives is very old


b. The building which he lives in is very old

V. Subject WHEN

It is used In an adjective clause to modify a noun of time

Example :

I’ll never forget the day

I met you then(on that day)

a. I’ll never forget the day when I met you


b. I’ll never forget the day on which I met you

VI. Reduction adjective clause to adjective phrase

Clause is a group of related words that contains subject and a verb

Phrase is a group of related word that doesn’t contain subject and a verb

a. An adjective phrase is a reduction of an adj cl, its modifies a noun


b. Only adjective cl that have a subject prounoun: who, which, or that are reduced to modifying adj
phrase

Example :
Adj clause : the girl who sitting next to me is mary

Adj phrase : the girl sitting next to me is mary

VII. Changing adj clause to adj phrase

To changing adj clause to adj phrase by reducing subject prounouns

Example :

Clause : the man who talking to john is from korea

Phrase : the man talking to john is from korea

Clause : the ideas which are presented in the book are interesting

Phrase : the ideas are presented in the book are interesting

Clause : the books that are on that shelf are mine

Phrase : the books are on that shelf are mine
