DOMINO
OTHER NAMES: Bones, Tien Gow, Pai Gow (in Chinese)

Dominoes is a tile game played with two or more people. The

traditional Sino-European Domino set consists of 28 rectangular tiles,
each tile with a line dividing the face of the tile into two squares, and
each square is marked with number of spots ( also called pips) or
blank.
The word “domino” is most likely derived from the Latin, dominus (the master of the house).
Domino games are played all over the world, but they are most popular in Latin America where the
game is upheld as the national game of many Caribbean countries.

ORIGIN
Dominoes first appeared in Chinese writings dated back to the Song Dynasty in the 12th
century, and it was first designed to represent all the possible roll with a pair of dice. Traditional
dominoes are generally made of bone or ivory with ebony pips. A set of tiles is divided into two.
Western Dominoes appeared in recorded history around the mid-18th century in Italy and
France. Through war, the game was carried into England as well. The Western Dominoes has few
differences in terms of design variation, and thus lead many to question a separate origin from the
East Asian Dominoes.

BENEFITS from Playing Dominoes

• Provides fun and opportunity for interaction among family and friends.
• Provides learning opportunities to stimulate the critical thinking and decision making.
• Develops social skills and builds character.

Equipment for Domino Games

Game Tables A card table with the traditional green felt surface is good for dominoes for the same
reason that it is good for playing cards. The felt keeps the faces and backs of the tiles from getting
scratched.

Tile racks Most domino players arrange the tiles of their hand in a semicircle on the tabletop in front
of themselves by standing the tiles on their sides.

Storage Boxes. The domino set should come in a storage box of its own
when you bought it. These vary from simple cardboard boxes to the more
common vinyl snap lock case. Some companies make wooden cases which
have a cribbage board built into their lid.

Score Sheets. Most games can keep score on a sheet of paper, but these days,
you might want to use a home computer to print out special sheets with rules
or special scoring instructions for games.

THE GAME
The most basic Western games are the block-and-draw
games for two to four players. The Dominoes are shuffled face
down on the table. Domino tiles can only be place in open ends.
A double tile is usually placed cross-ways in the layout,
straddling the end of the tile that is connected to.

The Seven Steps on How to Play Domino

1. The first player places the first tile on the table, usually a double-six. If no one
holds the double-six, then the double-five is played, and so on.
2. Once you begin drawing tiles, they are typically place on the edge so that
your opponent can see your tiles without showing its value.
3. The dominoes are shuffled to make a boneyard.
4. Acquire a domino set and pick an appropriate place for the game.
5. Take turns placing tiles. If someone cannot make a move you can draw from a boneyard.
6. The game ends when you placed all your tiles, or when a game is blocked.
7. Each player chooses a domino at random with the first move going to the player holding the
heavier domino.

PRACTICE SKILLS in CHESS
Movements of different Chess piece.

As you can see in case – 1, the king can’t capture because doing
that, would not put the king in check. So no rules will be violated.

But in case – 2, the king can’t capture because the white queen is
supported by the white rook. So the king would be in check if it
tries to capture the white queen, which is illegal.

Three ways to escape from this check.

1. Moving the king away, out of the danger zone
2. Blocking the attack by keeping a piece between the
attacking piece and the threatened king
3. By capturing the attacking piece.

Learning Competencies
• Executes the skills involved in the sport (PE8GS-IId-h-4)
o Practice of skills of selected indoor recreational activities (CHESS).
