Questions Cry of Revolution Sources

1. What is the background of the The first cry is a historical event where the Filipinos
controversy?
2. Were the information provided Dr. Pio Valenzuela, Santiago Alvarez, Guillermo
by the authors are reliable?
What were their basis?

to happen there on August 26, 1896 in Balintawak
but the location and date of the said event was
not clear and contradicted due to different

Masangkay, Don Vicente Samson, Gregoria de
jesus, and Olegario Diaz (Guardia Civil) some of
them participated in the revolution and act as the
eyewitnesses on the said historic event. Their
accounts become our background knowledge on
what really happened that day and gave us
confusion as each of them contradicted their date
and location. But we cannot really trust some of
their information as not all of them are present
during the historic event like Santiago Alvarez.
Meanwhile, Dr. Pio Valenzuela is a katipunero but
he is not known for his impeccable memory and it
seems that his statements are not consistent. Some
of their accounts support others such as Don
Vicente Samson a native balintawak that support

General Masangkay’s version of the First Cry.
Guardia Civil, Olegrio Diaz, based his information
from his official report findings. While for Gregoria
de jesus, I think she based her information from her
connection to her husband and the secret
documents that she’s safeguarding.
Each of their version of the First Cry differs but some
of them has a good credibility that makes their
version trustworthy. In Dr. Pio Valenzuela’s “The Cry
of Pugad Lawin”, a member of Katipunan and
present during the historic event. For General
Guillermo Masangkay’s “Cry of Balintawak”, one of
the original members of the Katipunan same with
Dr. Valenzuela but they still differ in location. In the
account of Santiago Alvarez, he is a prominent
katipunan warlord of Cavite but not present during
the historic event. While for Gregoria de jesus
whose wife of supremo, Andres Bonifacio, maybe
her version might be true as she is custodian of
secret documents. In the account of Olegario Diaz
(Guardia Civil) also “Cry of Balintawak”, his version
might be slightly reliable for he is Spanish
commander who investigated the discovery of
Katipunan. Laslty, on the account of Don Vicente
Samson which confirmed the authenticity and
credibility of General Masangkay’s version of “Cry
of Balintawak”. He is 12 years old at that time and I
think being one of an eyewitness of historic event is
unforgettable event for his whole life. Together with
his father and brother who are also members of
Katipunan. We conclude that each one of them
has a good credibility and support one another’s
claim yet still left us confusion.
Let’s be observant and critical with the different
versions of a historical event. Even though they
have differences in their version, they still have
similarities in their statements. By these we can
identify whether their account’s is credible or not.
Let’s just not focus on the statement but on author’s
credibility as well because every piece of
information is essential to have a better conclusion
to the said event.
