Kazakh food
Hospitable owner would offer his guest a seat at a place of honor. Traditionally, meal is served at a low
round table, called dastarkhan. First and foremost, in order to quench thirst of the guest a hostess would
treat him with a bowl of yogurt drink. This can be "kumys" - a drink based on fermented mare's milk -
or shubat the main ingredient of which is camel milk. Then, table will be filed with baursaks - balls of
dough, pre-fried in boiling oil (Asian analogue of donuts), samsa - triangular pastries with
meat, kausyrma - a kind of chebureks, fried doughs filled with meat and onions, raisins, kurt (small,
salted cheese balls) and, of course, tea. Here, to be objective, we should say that tea never grew on the
territory of Kazakhstan, it was introduced to the steppe of Sary-Arka from the outside, but despite this, tea
quickly gained popularity among the local population. And today, in fact, it is one of the main drinks in
Kazakh society.
After a long drawn tea ceremony, assortment of dishes on the
festive table will be complemented by meat dishes: kazi, shuzhuk, zhal,
zhaya, karta, kabyrga. The above dishes are traditionally prepared from horse meat or lamb. The main
dish of Kazakh cuisine, with which owners welcome their guests is besbarmak. Name of this dish is
translated from Kazakh as “five fingers” because of a manner to eat the dish by hand. Besbarmak's main
ingredients are: meat (lamb or horse meat), pasta (it is cut into small squares), as well as herbs (dill ,
parsley, cilantro, etc.).
The procedure of cutting meat cooked for besbarmak is a separate special ritual. Typically, this mission is
laid on the owner. According to traditions, each part of meat or bone has its own meaning and is served in
a special way. Thus, meat from the pelvic bone and tibia is given to senior honored guests. Son or
daughter-law gets pruning from a sternum. Cervical vertebra is usually served for unmarried girls. Sheep's
head is cooked in a special way and is served separately. The right to cut this element of besbarmak is
usually given to a guest of the highest rank.
According to the European classification, all these dishes belong to a group of second dishes and snacks.
As for traditional Kazakh first course, sorpa – rich broth completed by seasoned vegetables, spices and
herbs - occupies a special place. Sorpa, unlike other first courses, is for
drinking, so it is served in bowls. Tea ceremony completes the meal.
Americans eat a lot. They have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Most of Americans don't eat home but prefer to go to restaurants. They can choose from many kind
of restaurants. There is a great number of ethnic restaurants in the United States. Italian, Chinese and
Mexican food is very popular. An American institution is the fast food restaurant, which is very
convenient but not very healthy.
However there are some principles of American cuisine (if we may call it so). Americans drink a lot
of juices and soda, eat a lot of meat, fruits and vegetables, not much bread. In the morning Americans
have cereal or scrambled eggs, milk or orange juice.
Chicken or fish, fried potatoes, vegetable salads, and desert: this is the most common menu for lunch.
Dinner is probably the most important meal of the day, some people have family dinner, when all
members of family have to be there.
For dinner Americans usually have meat, fried or baked potatoes with ketchup or sour cream, corn,
peas, sometimes macaroni and cheese or spaghetti; ice-cream, fruit or cake may be for dessert.
Turkey, ham and apple pie are traditional for Christmas and Thanksgiving Day dinners.

Mass media
All kinds of different tools which come in use to help in distributing and circulating
information and entertainment to the public come under the term of mass media. In other words,
everything including radio, newspapers, cable, television and theatre are parts of mass media.
These tools include exchanging opinions and public involvement. Through essay on mass media,
we will go through it in detail.
In today’s world, mass media embraces internet, cell phones, electronic mail, computers,
pagers and satellites. All these new additions function as transmitting information from a single
source to multiple receivers.
In other words, they are interactive and work on the person to person formula. Thus, it
revolves around the masses i.e. the people. It is true that radio, television, press and cinema are in
the spotlight when we talk about mass media. Nonetheless, the role of pamphlets, books, magazines,
posters, billboards, and more also have equal importance if not less. Moreover, the reach of these
tools extends to a huge amount of masses living all over the country.
Television, cinema, radio and press are comparatively expensive forms of media which
private financial institutions or the Government runs. These tools centre on the idea of mass
production and mass distribution. Therefore, newspapers, television and radio cater to the needs of
the mass audience and accommodates their taste. As a result, it will not always be refined or
sophisticated. In other words, it displays popular culture.
The main function of mass media is to reach out to the masses and provide them with
information. In addition to that, it also operates to analyze and observe our surroundings and
provide information in the form of news accordingly. As a result, the masses get constantly updated
about not just their own surroundings but also around the world. This way mass media spreads and
interprets information. For instance, weather forecasts equip people and farmers to plan ahead.
Similarly, fishermen get updates about the tidal activities from the news. In addition to this, mass
media also strives to keep the fabric of our social heritage intact which showcasing our customs,
myths and civilization.
Another major product of mass media is advertising. This way people learn about the goods
and services in the market. It also spreads social awareness. For instance, anti-smoking campaign,
women empowerment, green earth clean earth and more. Most importantly, with the numerous
mediums available in multiple languages, the masses get entertainment in their own language easily.
Millions of people get to access a cheap source of relaxation and pass their time. In fact, it also
helps to transport momentarily from our ordinary lives to a dream world. Thus, it remains the
undisputed leader in reaching out to the masses.
All in all, while it is an effective tool, we must also keep a check on its consumption. In other
words, it has the power to create and destroy. Nonetheless, it is a medium which can bring about a
change in the masses. Thus, everyone must utilize and consume it properly.
Student canteen
My college is a very big one and it has a very modern canteen. It is perhaps
the most popular place in the college. It becomes very busy during the break times
very difficult to find a seat to sit on during those times, so we have to stand and
eat.
Our college canteen is very well equipped. One can buy almost every kind of
snack there, like chips, sandwiches, sweet, cakes etc. They are prepared in very
hygienic surroundings by our school cook, and tables to sit on and eat, and ovens
to keep the food warm. There is also a soda fountain which is Very popular among
the older students. All the students love to sit in the canteen and discuss the events
of the day. The noise level is always very high in the canteen as everyone is
shouting to make himself heard. There are notice boards and suggestion boxes
which all students are freely. There is also a separate enclosure for teachers. The
cook charges very reasonable rates from us. I think that the school canteen is my
favorite place in the school. I always enjoy myself there, and look forward to the
recess when I can rush to the canteen with my friends.
