Recap
COMPUTING AND INTERPRETING INTERVAL
ESTIMATE OF A POPULATION PROPORTION
At the end of the lesson, the students
Objective should be able to:
a) Understand the connection of
sample size and margin of error.
b) Identify the relation of confidence
interval to sample size; and
c) Solve for the sample size based on
selected confidence level.
d) Interpret the data based on the
results.
Formula 1 - Minimum Sample Size when
Estimating the Population Mean
There are two things to remember when we decide on the quality of
the sample size we need; confidence and the narrowness of the
interval. To compute the sample size, we derive the formula from the
formula of the margin of error E.
Therefore, the formula in
determining the Minimum
Sample Size needed
when estimating the
population mean is:

Answer 1: Answer 3:
Note : If the value of σ is unknown, it can be
estimated by the standard deviation s from a
prior sample. If a lack of sample deviation to
estimate σ occurred, divide the sample range R
by a constant which is usually 4 or 6. In this
case, a conservative estimate of approximately
R/ 4 is used. (Browne, 2001)
Example 1
In a city, Vincent wants to estimate the mean weight μ (in kilogram) of all
seven-year-old children to be included in his feeding program. He wants to
be 99% confident that the estimate of μ is accurate to within 0.06 kg.
Suppose from a previous study, the standard deviation of the weights of
the target population was 0.5 kg, what should be the sample size?
n=462.25,

Round up the value to 463. So, the required sample size is 463
seven-year-old children. Note: When determining sample size, we
always round up the resulting value to the next whole number.
