THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Senior High School (SHS) of K-12 Basic Education program refer to last two-years

extension High School that covers Grade 11 and 12 it is an enhanced and compulsory curriculum

that gives the students the possible tools and career choices after the high school by means

Senior High School (SHS), the students are now bridging themselves to some boarder career

choices that they may choose from according to their personal Interests and chosen field of

specialization in either vocational or academic courses. It also equips the students with the

knowledge and skills to pursue a better life and help student families and community.

The K to 12 Senior High School is believed to be the solution of the elongated dilemma

of the Philippines educational system because this prepares the students in their entry to Senior

High Scool and equips them with relevant and globally competitive skills which skills will foster

employability.

Aquino 2011 pointed out the education is the key to long-term problems of the country. If

basic education will be fixed. And if the country’s problems will be fix, it will be build a truly

strong society. Prior to the full implementation of the Senior High School (SHS), a research and

development process particularly on the awareness, preparedness and needs will be explored in

order to come up with contingency measures prior to its full implementation in 2016.
The DepED Primer (2011) cited that the SHS modeling is a research and development

(R&D) activity where some designs and strategies will be tried out by the identified model

schools. As such, the model schools are given the flexibility to innovate and develop their own

curriculum base on the needs of the students and demands of the local industries; design their

instructional material; and explore and experiment varied teaching-learnings strategies suited to

their students and learning environment.

According to Republic act no. 10533, also known as the enhanced basic education act

signed into law by Pres. Benigno Aquino III, the vision of Senior High School (SHS) is to

establish a system education that truly provides the youth.

Background of The Study

Preparedness of Grade 10 Students for Senior High School comes with the different

factors. A student may be prepared academically, but not financially established as other students

were. A student choice track may not be his/her personal interests but perhaps a choice made by

influence so he/she may not be ready for it. It can also be possible that the student can still up to

now, make up his/her mind of what career/track to choose for undecided so he/she might also be

ready for that problem. It can be that the student is not serious about choosing his/her career

resulting to easy going plans and decision.

K-12 Education Plan was published on October 5, 2010, Dep Ed Discussion Paper (2010 ). This

is part of President Benigno Noy Noy Aquino III Educational Reform Program. The P-Noy

Administration believes that adding more years to basic education in the Philippines could help solve the

problem of unemployment, keep up global standards, and help Filipino students to have more time to

choose the career that best suits their skills.

As of 2010 Luistro averred that the K-12 Basic Education plan is said to be the answer to add one

more year on both primary and secondary levels plus kindergarten. Though the opinion and reaction of

the public are divided, some are not. Among the main issues that relate to the K-12 program are the

financial capacity of parents, the number of schools and classrooms, the number of teachers, even the

availability of books and other school supplies. Though, DepEd also stated that the government will

basically shoulder most of the education cost.

The enhanced K-12 Basic Education Program is said to be an answer to the country educational

reform. This matter is being discussed anywhere by educators and stuns anyone who hears this new

proposal. School administrators are even bothered on new things to be considered for the program

implementation.

In Lucban, Quezon, particularly in the schools where the study was conducted, there were issues

encountered and concerns to be attended by teachers and school heads along the implementation of K to

12 Program. As a teacher in one of these schools, the researcher herself felt the need to reconcile both

positive and negative issues hurled at most by the students, the parents and even by other teachers. This

situation prompted the researcher to conduct a study relative to these issues and concerns on the

implementation of K to 12 which is now a law signed by the incumbent President Aquino.

Those are some factors that may possibly affect the students preparedness of Senior High

School in fact the Grade 10 students must already made up their minds of what track to choose

since they are already near to the collegiste level of they already have potential to work after

senior high school.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on Thorndike’s law of preparedness which Magsino (2009)

stressed that learning considers the preparedness of the learner so that it could be more lasting

and more effective. Sharma and Sharma (2006) also emphasized that preparedness include all

those preparatory adjustments which immediately precede the activity. Reminding the learner of

his past experiences; mental preparation for the understanding of new things, diverting his

attention towards the subject to be learned, changing the environment to suit the learning are all

included in the preparedness. This law relates with the topic of the present study which is on the

preparedness of the grade 10 student in the Senior High School. Likewise, this level of

preparedness could account for the quality of learning that pupils/students gain and it could also

be used as reference to predict future outcomes.

Supportive to the law of preparedness is the resource-based theory of Wright, et al.

(2006) which highlighted the unique contribution of human, organizational and physical

resources possessed by the organization. As the organization acquires additional resources,

unique synergies occur between its new and existing resources and because each organization
already possess a distinct combination of human, organizational and physical resources, the

particular type of synergies that occur will differ from one organization to another.

Statement of the Problem

The main problem of this research is to determine the level of preparedness of selected

Grade 10 students of Saint Ferdinand College (SFC) relative to Senior High School (SHS) For

School Year 2019-2020.

Further it seeks to identify the level of preparedness in terms of academic.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study hope to benefit the following:

Grade 10 Students - The research study can help students gain awareness in order for them to

be prepared before entering Senior High School (SHS) level of education such as: their interest,

chosen course, grades and performance inside the class. Also the results of the research study can

help students determine the role, function, and affectivity of Senior High School program to their

level of preparedness.

Teacher - for function as an important foundation for student’s preparedness before entering

Senior High School. It can help them formulate methods to ensure student’s learning, together

with the development of skills and talent that can be used for their later years. Also, the results of

the research study can notify teachers to address student’s needs in aspects of education.

Parents - This research study can help parent’s guardians, and relatives to provide support or

guidance on the career path of the student. Also, it can give them awareness to their duties upon

fulfilling the needs of students before entering Senior High School (SHS) mostly in financial

aspects. Also, the results of the study can provide them a clearer view of the impact and benefits

of Senior High School to the future of the students and their lives.
School Administrator - This study will be used as a basis for implementing the raised

curriculum and on how to enhance learning process for the Senior High School (SHS) students.

Researcher - The result of this study give researchers to gather more reliable information and

stand as a practical basis for their researches.

Future Researcher - The outcome of the study is beneficial to the future researchers. This study

may be one of the basis that a new theory in learning will arise.

Scope and Delimitation

The Study is limited only in knowing the Level of Preparedness of Selected 100 Grade 10

Students of Saint Ferdinand College relative to Senior High School (SHS) for 2019-2020 by

Means of Perception of the respondents according to the topic. This research was conducted at

Saint Ferdinand College Centro Ilagan City.
