PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.
2. Describe the organization and the situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Name and describe your organization.

Sweetgreen, a healthy fast-casual restaurant that turns farm fresh ingredients into salads, warm
bowls with quinoa/wild rice, salad dressings, and frescas. Their mission began to bear fruit
when they opened up in August of 2007. According to their website, their mission is to build
“healthier communities, by connecting people with real food.”

2) Describe your role in the organization (it can be an internal or external role).

I started out at Sweetgreen as a Store Lead, which is comparable to an Assistant Store

Manager. I was second in command when it came to store operations and management. I
worked closely with my Store Manager, learning the business, planning, implementing,
monitoring, and controlling and reviewing the day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month
operation game plans. In much of my role, I operated as a coach to my subordinates going over
the standards and policies and making sure we were adhering to the game plan and the overall
Sweetgreen mission. In all I worked in five different locations over the course of three years,
including its busiest location in Wall St, overseeing one store restructuring and one store grand
opening. Working under these different circumstances, with different teams gave me a lot of
experience in terms of leadership and meeting different stakeholder expectations.

3) Describe the situation, including information you think the will help the reader
understand the most important elements of the situation. (This will require
selectivity: part of the art of case writing is separating the essential facts from the
mass of information that might be included).

I think the best situation that I can describe is my experience opening a new Sweetgreen
location in New York City’s Upper West Side neighborhood. While the construction portion of
this store opening is not going to be emphasized or referenced at all. I can instead offer my
point of view of my experience hiring and training employees, operational planning, building
culture, and meeting expectations. Opening this location was a collaborative process that

involved honestly more knowledge and communication than I garnered in my experience, but I
hope to relate as much as I can offer to fulfilling this project’s objective. I was offered this
opportunity by a man named Jay who was the area leader for all of New York City’s locations. I
was offered it as a chance to work closer to home, develop the team, and to solidify the store’s
work structure and operations.
