“Very Good. Now, what do we call the electrons in the

outermost shell of an atom? Yes Jessa?” “Ma’am, valence electrons”

“Correct! We also discussed about the octet Rule,

which states that when atoms lose, gain or share
electrons during a chemical bond, the outermost shell
should be filled with 8 electrons similar to those noble “Ma’am, Octet Rule can also be
gases. This Octet rule can also be called as what? Yes called as Rule of Eight.”
Jaime?”

“Yes, that correct! The other name is rule of eight, “Ma’am, He is Gilbert Newton
because of the Greek prefix word Octa meaning Eight. Lewis.”
Now, who is the American chemist who proposed the
Octet Rule? He is, yes Carla?”

“Correct! He is also the proponent of LEDS or the Lewis

ENGAGE

“Very good. By the way, what did you observe with the
words given earlier? Do you think they pertain to one
concept? Yes Joyce?
“Ma’am, I think those words pertain
to only one concept, which is
“That is correct! All the words that were given earlier Chemical Bonding.”
pertain to one concept which is chemical bonding.”

“Talking about the elements, there are 118 known

elements which are presented in the periodic table of
elements. But in referenceto the substances existing
here on earth, there are even more than that number.
Why? It is because elements react with one another
forming new substances. And these new substances
are called what? Yes Mae?”

“Very Good. It is called compounds, which are totally “Ma’am, these are called
different both in their physical and chemical aspects compounds.”
from the original atomic element from which they came
from.”

EXPLORE

“Class, if you can still remember, the compounds are

bound together by a strong attractive force called
what? Yes Charles?”

“Precisely! Let us try to look at this video. (Chemical “Ma’am, chemical bond”
Bond – Ionic bond will be given through a short video).

“Now,one type of chemical bond is the ionic bond.

Ionic bond is formed when there is transfer of
electrons from one atom to another.”

“So, what is the compound that can be formed in this

ionic bonding? Yes, Jessa?”

“Correct! It is called Ionic Compound. This type of

bond involves the gaining and losing of electrons. In “Ma’am. Ionic compound”
doing so, the atoms become a charged particle and
now will be called as ion.”

“So, when an atom loses an electron and becomes

positively charged ion this is now called what? Yes
Diane?”
UNIVERSITY OF SAINT ANTHONY
(Dr. Santiago G. Ortega Memorial)
City of Iriga

COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

“Correct, it is called cation and the one that gain

electron and becomes negatively charged ion is called “Ma’am, this is called cation.”
anion.”

“Before moving on to how ionic bond happens. Let us

first find out how ions achieve charges. For example,
the atoms of Sodium and chlorine.”

EXPLAIN

“Sodium belongs to group 1A and therefore has a

valence electron of 1. Sodium electron configuration
would reveal that it has one excess of 1 electron to
make the number of its outmost energy level equal to
8 to attain the stable noble gas structure (2,8) as
stated on the octet rule.”

“The excess of 1 electron of sodium has to be given

away. As this happens, sodium atom will now become
sodium ion with a charge of 1+.”

Na atom Na ion

2,8,1 2,8,1 (1 electron is given away)

no. of proton=11 no. of proton=11

no. of electron=11 no. of proton=10

charge= 0 charge= 1

“In a neutral sodium (Na) atom, the number of

electrons is equal to the number of protons. So, if Na
has 11 protons (same as atomic number), its number
of electrons is also equal to 11. But once sodium has
given its 1 electron, the number of protons will now be
more than be the number of electrons by 1, thus the
charge 1+. A positive sign denotes a proton, and the
value of 1 denotes the difference in the number of
protons to electron.”

“Now, let us see what charge a chlorine atom will

have.”

“In what group in the periodic table does chlorine

belongs? Yes Claire?

“Correct! Which also means that chlorine has a valence

electron of how many? Yes Bea?” “Ma’am, Chlorine belongs to Group
7A.”
“Very Good, Chlorine belongs to group 7b and has
valence electron of 7. Looking at its electron’s “Ma’am, 7”
configuration or distribution, it would reveal that
chlorine has 7 electrons in its outermost energy level.
With that, what do you think will chlorine do to its 7
valence electrons? Again class, to attain the stable
noble gas structure, an atom must have 8 valence
UNIVERSITY OF SAINT ANTHONY
(Dr. Santiago G. Ortega Memorial)
City of Iriga

COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

electrons.”

“So, instead of giving away the 7-valence electron it

only needs one valence electron, chlorine will accept 1
electron from somewhere.
Cl atom Cl ion

2,8,7 2,8,7 (1 electron is accepted)

no. of proton=17 no. of proton=17

no. of electron=17 no. of electron=18

charge= 0 charge= 1

“As the chlorine atom accepts 1 electron, it will now

become an ion with a charge of 1- means that the
number of electrons denoted by a negative sign, is
more than 1 than its number of protons.”

“Okay, Class, take a look at this one.”

Cl

“Class, what did you observe? Did you notice

something? Yes Vanessa?”

“Ma’am, I noticed that Chlorine has

8 valence electrons/dots, but it
“Good observation. It has 8 valence electrons or dots belongs to group 7, so it should
because it undergoes Ionic Bonding. Ionic Bond just have 7 valence electrons not 8
formationalways involves a bonding between a metal Ma’am.”
and a non-metal. To show as how this formation
happens, let us use the atoms of sodium and chlorine
as an example.”

“So, for us to know how ionic compound is formed let’s

do LEDS. Because when you master already the LEDS,
it will be very easy for you to do chemical bonding.
Again, what is the symbol of Sodium? Yes Maria?”

“Correct! What group does Sodium belong? Yes,

Tracy?”

“Correct! So, how many valence electrons are in

sodium? How many dots should we used? Yes,
Clarisse?” “Ma’am, Na”

“Exactly! So, let’s Draw.”

Cl

Na Cl = Cl
“Chlorine accepts 1 electron of sodium to also achieve
the stable configuration of 8. Both atoms become
stable. Electrons are being transferred. The transferred
is made possible as the electron affinity is met. And
when we say electron affinity, what does this mean
class? Yes Anna?”

“Ma’am, Electron affinity is the

measure of how much energy is
“Very Good! So, now I have here a picture, what do released when an electron is gained
you see on the screen? This is what? Yes Charlie? by a certain atom.”

“Correct! This is salt. Did you know that Salt is an “Ma’am, I think It is salt.”
example of an Ionic Compound? Yes James?

“Alright, the salt that we use as spice in our food is an

ionic compound. Why? Because it is a product of Ionic “No Ma’am”
bonding. The Na, Cl or your Sodium and chlorine when
combined which become a compound named Sodium
Chloride or simply the Salt.”

“Sodium Chloride is the chemical name of Salt. Since

compounds are composed of two or more elements.
Compounds are represented through a short-hand
method in writing the name of the compound, which
known as the… What? Yes Jessa?”

“Correct! It is the Chemical Formula. Chemical Formula “Ma’am, Chemical Formula”

shows symbols to represents the elements and a
subscript to represent the exact number of atoms
used.”

“Knowing the names of the elements and a few basic

rules allows us to name simple compounds given the
chemical formula. We also can reverse the process.
UNIVERSITY OF SAINT ANTHONY
(Dr. Santiago G. Ortega Memorial)
City of Iriga

COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

That is, if we know the name of the compound, we

should be able to write the chemical formula.”

Rules for writing a chemical formula

 First write the symbols of the elements which
form the compound.
 Below the symbol of each element, write down
the valency.
 Finally, cross-over the valencies of the
combining atoms. That is, with the first atom
we write the valency of the second atom (as
subscript); and with the second atom we write
we write the valency of first atom (as
subscript).

Example:

Element: C Cl

Valency: 4 1

Formula: C1Cl4 or CCl4

Mg2+ Br1

MgBr2

Mg1Br2= MgBr2

“The compounds are called BINARY COMPOUNDS,

since they involved only two elements.” We also have
compounds that contain three different elements.
These compounds are called what? Yes Dave?”

“Correct! These are called ternary compounds, which

most of these compounds are consist of metallic cation “Ma’am, Ternary Compounds”
and a polyatomic anion.”

Example:

Na+ + OH = NaOH
Ca+2 + CO2- = CaCO3

“So, that’s all about writing chemical formula. We come

now to naming Binary and Ternary Compounds”

“Naming Binary and Ternary compound is so simple.

For binary compounds, you should name the cation

first (specifically the charge, if any). Then name the

anion by changing its suffix to –ide.

For example:
NaCl- named as Sodium Chloride
MgBr- named as Magnesium Bromide
CaF- named as Ca
CuBr- named as copper (II) bromide.
SnCl- named as tin (II) chloride

“What do you notice in the last two examples? Yes

Albert?

“Very Good! There is the use of Roman numeral to

describe an ion’s charge. So, the last two examples “Ma’am, I noticed that there is the

is enclosed in parentheses and placed immediately
after the metal name.”

“To name Ternary Compounds, you just need to name

the cation first, followed by the name of the polyatomic
ion.”

For Example:

NaOH- named as sodium hydroxide

CaCO- named as calcium carbonate
