Lesson 1: Covalent Bond

Guide Card
Introduction
A covalent bond is a chemical bond between two non-metal atoms, also called a molecular bond
that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. These electron pairs are known as shared
pairs or bonding pairs.
Types of Covalent Bond

1. SINGLE COVALENT BOND: A covalent bond formed by mutual sharing of one electron pair is
called single covalent bond.

2. DOUBLE COVALENT BOND: A covalent bond formed by mutual sharing of two valence
electrons is called double covalent bond.

3. TRIPLE COVALENT BOND: A Covalent bond formed by mutual sharing of three electrons is
called triple covalent bond.

TYPES ON THE BASIS OF POLARITY

1. POLAR COVALENT BOND: a type of chemical bond where a pair of electrons is unequally shared
between two atoms. In a polar covalent bond, the electrons are not equally shared because one atom spends
more time with the electrons than the other atom.

2. NON-POLAR COVALENT BOND: are a type of bond that occurs when two atoms share a pair of
electrons with each other.

The polarity of a covalent bond is defined by any difference in electronegativity the two atoms
participating.

REMINDER:
Students will use another sheet to answer all the given activities.

Learning Competency
➢ Recognize different types of compounds (ionic or covalent) based on their properties such as
melting point, hardness, polarity and electrical and thermal conductivity

Sub Task
➢ Recognize different types of compound. COVALENT
Activity Card
Activity 1: IDENTIFY ME!

Identify which types of element can form Covalent Bond. Draw the Lewis Structure of each
element you identified.

Ca N Na O
K S Li
Cl P Au Ag
Hg Pb Br
H I F C

Activity 2: WHO AM I?

Using the periodic table of elements for the electronegativity values, identify if the following pairs of
non-metallic elements are polar or non-polar. If the difference is less than 0.5 then the bond is non-polar
and if the difference is between 1.6-2.0 the bond is considered polar.

1. CO2 2. H2O 3. NH3

4. CCl4 5. CH4

6. SO2 7. BF3 8. H2S

9. O2 10. CF4

Activity 3: “Tie” Between You and Me…

Encircle the pair of shared electrons in the following molecules below. Count the number of bond
(single, double or triple) and write it on your answer sheet.

Assessment Card 2
True Colors
Color the circle pink if the statement is true, and blue if the statement is false.
Electrons are shared unequally in a polar covalent bond.

For the molecule O=O there is a total of 4 electrons in the shared double bond.

Covalent bonds form only between atoms of different elements.

When a metal reacts with a nonmetal a covalent bond is formed.

A nonpolar covalent bond results from the unequal sharing of a pair of electrons between atoms in
a molecule.

A double bond occurs when two atoms share two pairs of electrons.

Non-metals are element or substance that has negative ions.

Carbon dioxide has polar covalent bond.

A covalent bond is formed through the transfer of electrons from one to another.

A covalent bond is shared pair of electrons between two or more non-metals.
