1.1 HUMAN BODY ORGANIZATION

A. ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY


1. Anatomy
 is the scientific discipline that investigates the body’s structure
• Levels of Anatomy
o Developmental anatomy: studies the structural changes that occur between conception and
adulthood.
o Embryology: a subspecialty of developmental anatomy, considers changes from conception to the
end of the eighth week of development.
o Cytology: examines the structural features of cells

o Histology: examines tissues, which are composed of cells and the materials surrounding them

o Gross anatomy: the study of structures that can be examined without the aid of a microscope, can
be approached from either a systemic or a regional perspective
o Systemic anatomy: the body is studied system by system

o Regional anatomy, the body is studied area by area

o Surface anatomy: is the study of the external form of the body and its relation to deeper structures

o Anatomical imaging: uses radiographs (x-rays), ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),
and other technologies to create pictures of internal structures
o Anatomical anomalies: are physical characteristics that differ from the normal pattern

2. Physiology
 is the scientific investigation of the processes or functions of living things
 the major goals when studying human physiology are to understand and predict the body’s
responses to stimuli and to understand how the body maintains conditions within a narrow range
of values in a constantly changing environment
• Levels of Physiology
o Cell physiology: examines the processes occurring in cells

o Systemic physiology: considers the functions of organ systems

o Neurophysiology: focuses on the nervous system

o Cardiovascular physiology: deals with the heart and blood

o Exercise physiology: focuses on the changes in function and structure caused by exercise.
B. STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION

Six levels of organization of the human body:


1. Chemical
2. Cellular
3. Tissue
4. Organ
5. Organ system
6. Organism
C. CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE

 Humans are organisms, sharing characteristics with other organisms. The most important
common feature of all organisms is life.
 Six characteristics of life:
1. Organization refers to the specific interrelationships among the parts of an organism and how
those parts interact to perform specific functions.
2. Metabolism: refers to all of the chemical reactions taking place in an organism. It includes an
organism’s ability to break down food molecules, which the organism uses as a source of energy
and raw materials to synthesize its own molecules.
 Catabolism- breaking down the large molecules to smaller molecules
 Anabolism- building the large molecules from small molecules
3. Responsiveness: is an organism’s ability to sense changes in its external or internal environment
and adjust to those changes. Organisms can also make adjustments that maintain their internal
environment.
4. Growth refers to an increase in the size or number of cells, which produces an overall
enlargement of all or part of an organism.
 Hyperplasia- refers an increase in the size or number of cells, example puberty
 Hypertrophy- refers an increase in the number of muscle cells, example result of
exercising
5. Development: includes the changes an organism undergoes through time, beginning with
fertilization and ending at death. Development usually involves growth, but it also involves
differentiation and morphogenesis.
 Differentiation is change in cell structure and function from generalized to specialized
 Morphogenesis is change in the shape of tissues, organs, and the entire organism
6. Reproduction is the formation of new cells or new organisms.

D. BODILY REQUIREMENTS

 Five essential requirements that all organisms, including humans, require:

1.Water
o Water is the most abundant substance found in the body.
o At birth, up to 78% of a baby’s body is composed of water
o at 1 year of age this has dropped to 65%
o In adult males the figure has dropped to 60% and in adult females the figure is 55%
o Water is required for the various metabolic processes that are necessary for an organism’s
survival.
o Water is necessary to transport essential substances around the organism.
o Water helps to regulate body temperature.

2. Food
o Food supplies the energy for the organism to fulfil all the essential characteristics mentioned
above.
o It also supplies the raw materials for these characteristics – particularly growth.

3. Oxygen
o Oxygen forms 20% of air and is used in the release of energy from the assimilated nutrients.

4. Heat
o Heat is a form of energy that partly controls the rate at which metabolic reactions occur.

5. Pressure
o There are two types of pressure that are required by an organism:

∘ atmospheric pressure, which is important in the process of breathing;


∘ hydrostatic pressure, which keeps the blood flowing through the body
E. HOMEOSTASIS

 Homeostasis
 is the existence and maintenance of a relatively constant environment within the body
 body’s attempt to maintain a stable internal environment by achieving some sort of balance
 body uses various homeostatic mechanisms to monitor and maintain a dynamic state of
equilibrium within the body – that is, a balance in which the internal environment conditions can
react to external environmental conditions by changing within quite narrow limits
 The homeostatic mechanisms include:
1. receptors – the body has receptors that sense external and internal environmental changes and
provide information on the changes to the control centre;
2. control centre – the control centre determines what a particular value (e.g. pH value or blood
pressure) should be and sends out a message to the effectors;
3. effectors – once they have received the information from the control centre, the effectors cause
responses to take place within the body’s internal environment that hopefully will produce the
changes that will enable the internal environment to return to normal values
 Disease disrupts homeostasis and sometimes results in death. Modern medicine attempts to
understand disturbances in homeostasis and works to reestablish a normal range of values.

A. NEGATIVE FEEDBACK
Most systems of the body are regulated by negative-feedback mechanisms, which
maintain homeostasis. Negative means that any deviation from the set point is made smaller
or is resisted; therefore, in a negative-feedback mechanism, the response to the original
stimulus results in deviation from the set point, becoming smaller.
B. POSITIVE FEEDBACK

 Positive-feedback mechanisms occur when a response to the original stimulus results in the
deviation from the set point becoming even greater.
F. TERMINOLOGY AND THE BODY PLAN

1. Body position
 Anatomical position refers to a person standing erect with the face directed forward, the upper
limbs hanging to the sides, and the palms of the hands facing forward
 A person is supine when lying face upward and
 prone when lying face downward
2. Directional terms
 Directional terms describe parts of the body relative to each other
 Right and left are retained as directional terms in anatomical terminology.
 Up is replaced by superior, down by inferior, front by anterior, and back by posterior.
 In humans, superior is synonymous with cephalic which means toward the head, because, when
we are in the anatomical position, the head is the highest point. In humans, the term inferior is
synonymous with caudal which means toward the tail, which would be located at the end of the
vertebral column if humans had tails
 The anterior surface of the human body is therefore the ventral surface,
 The word posterior and dorsal means “back”.
 Proximal means “nearest,” whereas distal means “distant.” These terms are used to refer to
linear structures, such as the limbs, in which one end is near another structure and the other end is
farther away. Each limb is attached at its proximal end to the body, and the distal end, such as the
hand, is farther away
 Medial means “toward the midline,” and lateral means “away from the midline.” The nose is in a
medial position in the face, and the eyes are lateral to the nose.
 Superficial describes a structure close to the surface of the body, and deep is toward the interior
of the body. The skin is superficial to muscle and bone.
3. Body Parts and Regions

The central region of the body consists of the head, neck, and trunk. The trunk can be divided into
the thorax (chest), abdomen (region between the thorax and pelvis), and pelvis (the inferior end of the
trunk associated with the hips). The upper limb is divided into the arm, forearm, wrist, and hand. The
arm extends from the shoulder to the elbow, and the forearm extends from the elbow to the wrist. The
lower limb is divided into the thigh, leg, ankle, and foot. The thigh extends from the hip to the knee,
and the leg extends from the knee to the ankle
4. Body Planes

A plane divides, or sections, the body, making it possible to “look inside” and observe the body’s
structures. A sagittal plane runs vertically through the body, separating it into right and left portions.
The word sagittal literally means “the flight of an arrow” and refers to the way the body would be split
by an arrow passing anteriorly to posteriorly. A median plane is a sagittal plane that passes through the
midline of the body, dividing it into equal right and left halves. A transverse (horizontal) plane runs
parallel to the ground, dividing the body into superior and inferior portions. A frontal (coronal) plane
runs vertically from right to left and divides the body into anterior and posterior parts.
Organs are often sectioned to reveal their internal structure. A cut through the long axis of the organ is
a longitudinal section, and a cut at right angles to the long axis is a transverse (cross) section. If a cut is
made across the long axis at other than a right angle, it is called an oblique section
5. Body Cavities

The trunk contains three large cavities that do not open to the outside of the body: the thoracic, the
abdominal, and the pelvic cavities. The rib cage surrounds the thoracic cavity, and the muscular
diaphragm separates it from the abdominal cavity. The thoracic cavity is divided into right and left parts
by a median partition called the mediastinum (middle wall). The mediastinum contains the heart, the
thymus, the trachea, the esophagus, and other structures, such as blood vessels and nerves. The two
lungs are located on each side of the mediastinum. Abdominal muscles primarily enclose the abdominal
cavity, which contains the stomach, the intestines, the liver, the spleen, the pancreas, and the kidneys.
Pelvic bones encase the small space known as the pelvic cavity, where the urinary bladder, part of the
large intestine, and the internal reproductive organs are housed. The abdominal and pelvic cavities are not
physically separated and sometimes are called the abdominopelvic cavity.
