ACTIVITY 1

1. Site your own ideas why environmental science is an important course. Enumerate at least
five sentences.

- Environmental science studies the physical, chemical, and biological processes that occur
on Earth, as well as the social, political, and cultural processes that affect our planet. It is
significant because it enables us to understand how the relationships work. Environmental
science studies will keep us up to date on environmental issues that are happening, climate
change, ozone layer depletion, acid rain, and the negative effect of microplastics on the
marine environment and biodiversity, which are not only national or local issues but also
global issues. So you can see how development, population increase, infrastructure, and
transportation systems all have a negative impact on the environment and natural
ecosystems. And that you can become knowledgeable with the numerous environmental
problems caused by poor hygiene, energy waste, and other factors and use them to develop
and preserve a healthier environment for future generations. Then you'll know how to apply
numerous pollution prevention and control measures to produce a cleaner world.

2. One of the functions of environment is to enhance the quality of life, give three reasons why
is it so.

- One of the reason is that you will be able to utilize different pollution prevention and
management techniques to produce an environment that is less polluted or pollution-free.
The second advantage of studying environmental science is that it will help you better
comprehend how people and other living things interact. Carbon dioxide, which plants utilize
for photosynthesis, is produced by people. On the other hand, plants generate the oxygen
that people need to breathe. Lastly, animal waste is utilized as fertilizer and a source of
nutrients for the growth of plants and microorganisms. Animals and humans both consume
plants as food. In conclusion, Mother Nature created people, plants, and microbes to depend
on one another for existence.

3. Why do you think the environment is the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors
that act upon an organism? Enumerate 3 reasons.

- Because the environment interacts with all kinds of physical, chemical and biotic factors, it
has light, heat, water, air and then it has biotic components such as animals, people, plants
and other living things. It also has physical components which are the solid surfaces, then
chemically it has different types of chemicals, those in the periodic table.

4. Give the 4 spheres of the earth and describe each.

 Lithosphere - consists of the entire cold, hard solid land of the planet's crust
(surface), the semi-solid land beneath the crust, and the liquid land near the planet's
center. The lithosphere's surface is very uneven.
 Hydrosphere - contains all of the planet's solid, liquid, and gaseous water. It has a
thickness of 10 to 20 kilometers. The hydrosphere extends from the Earth's surface
several kilometers into the lithosphere and upward approximately 12 kilometers into
the atmosphere. The hydrosphere contains a small amount of fresh water (non-
salty). This water falls to the Earth's surface as precipitation from the atmosphere, as
rivers and streams along the surface, and as groundwater beneath the Earth's
surface.

 Biosphere - contains all of the living things on the planet This All microorganisms,
plants, and animals are included in the sphere.  of the Earth Living things form
ecological communities within the biosphere. Communities based on an area's
physical surroundings These communities are known as biomes. Deserts, grasslands,
and tropical rainforests are just a few examples. The different types of biomes that
exist within the biosphere.

 Atmosphere - includes all of the air in the Earth's system It stretches from less than 1
m below the planet's surface to more than 10,000 km above it. The upper
atmosphere shields the biosphere's organisms from the sun's ultraviolet radiation. It
also absorbs and emits light. Heat, Weather occurs when the air temperature in the
lower portion of this sphere changes

5. Give 5 chemical elements common to all living organisms.

 Carbon
 Hydrogen
 Nitrogen
 Oxygen
 Phosphorus
