Sexual Identity and Sexual Behaviors

Sexual identity is how one thinks of oneself regarding whom one is

romantically or sexually interested. It may also refer to sexual orientation
which is when people identify or dis-identify with sexual orientation or
determine not to classify with sexual orientation.

Sexual identity and sexual behavior are closely related to sexual

orientation. They are distinguished from sexual identity and the character or
personality of an individual. On the other hand, sexual behavior refers to
actual fleshly acts performed by the individual. Sexual orientation refers to
romantic, or sexual attractions toward persons of the opposite sex or
gender, the same sex or gender, to both or more than one gender, or no one.

Sexual Identities
Heterosexuality refers to a pattern of attraction to persons of the
opposite gender.
Bisexuality describes a pattern of attraction towards both males and
females, or to more than one gender.
Homosexuality is a pattern of attraction to other persons of the same
gender. The term lesbian is commonly used to refer to homosexual women,
and the term gay is commonly used to refer to homosexual men, although
gay is sometimes used to refer to women as well.

LGBTQIA+, is an initial that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual,

transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual. A plus sign meant to cover
anyone else who is not included.

Terminology

The first three letters of LGBTQIA+ deal with sexual identity. It can be
broken down into lesbian, gay and bisexual.
Lesbian- term for women sexually and affectionately oriented toward
other women.
Gay- Homosexual person or those attracted to the same gender.
Bisexual- those that are sexually and affectionately to both men and
women.

The “T” in the LGBTQIA+ can have several different meanings, but
typically deals with gender identity:
*Transgender-term for someone that identifies as a different gender
than what was assigned on their birth certificate.
*Transsexual- can mean someone transitioning from one sex to
another using surgery or medical treatment.
Queer- this term can have a various definition but can be seen as an
inclusive term or as a unique celebration of not molding to social norms.
Intersex- it’s used for individuals that don’t fit into specific gender
norms of woman or man; it can also 2 be used for those with reproductive
anatomy that isn’t typical.
Asexual- use for those that don’t feel sexual attraction to either sex or
that don’t feel romantic attraction in the typical way.
The “+” sign at the end allows the acronym to cover new subjects of
the community.
Gender Identity Sexual Identity
is a matter of forming
refers to what it means an enduring
to be male or female, recognition of the
which is linked to meaning of one's
sexual expression, but sexual feelings,
also concerns broader attractions, and
issues of masculinity behavior. This often
and femininity. takes the form of
labelling one's sexual
orientation.
(Savin-Williams, 1998)
The question, "Who am I?" is especially pertinent during adolescence.
Gender role socialization becomes very intense during your adolescence. In
early adolescence, you are often ensured by your family (parents) to conform
to social norms. Expectations about appropriate forms of identity expression
for males and females are instilled in you.
