Ignite Lesson 1: Human Sexuality 13

When we talk about people’s sexual interest and attraction to others, we

usually talk about Human Sexuality. It primarily molds through emotional
and sexual attraction to certain genders or sexes. People experience so many
different things like desires, fantasies, values, behaviors, beliefs, roles,
attitudes and relationships; all these are a part of understanding human
sexuality. Sexuality plays an important role in masculine and feminine
identification, because it is natural and a healthy part of life of being a male
or a female.

The name given at birth, the toys you played with growing up, the peers you
interact with, the choices of clothes and your responsibilities at home; all
these are included in your sexuality. Your totality is influenced by your
family, friends, environment and the society you live with. As you grow
older, having self-confidence and understanding of yourself helps mold your
personality.

Basic Terms in Sexuality According to The World Health Organization

Sex- refers to as the biological characteristics that define humans as female or

male. While these sets of biological characteristics are not mutually exclusive,
as there are individuals who possess both, they tend to differentiate humans as
males and females. In general use in many languages, the term sex is often
used to mean “sexual activity”, but for technical purposes in the context of
sexuality and sexual health discussions, the above definition is preferred.

Sexuality- refers to sexuality as a central aspect of being human throughout

life and encompasses sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation,
eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction. Sexuality is experienced and
expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors,
practices, roles and relationships. While sexuality can include all of these
dimensions, not all of them are always experienced or expressed. Sexuality is
influenced by the interaction of biological, psychological, social, economic,
political, cultural, ethical, legal, historical, religious and spiritual factors.

Health 3 Page 2 of 7
Gender- , refers to gender as roles, behaviors, activities, attributes, and
opportunities that any society considers appropriate for girls and boys, and
women and men. Gender interacts with, but is different from, the binary
categories of biological sex .

Key Points:
The biological basis of being a male or female is sex and the way you act and
behave in the society is what you call gender. For example, if you are born
with female sex characteristics (sex) you are assigned as a girl (gender); if
you are born with male sex characteristics (sex) you are assigned as a boy
(gender). There are few instances when babies are born with both the male
and female characteristics and it is called an intersex. As you grow older, you
experience and express yourself as a sexual being and what you do and who
you are refers to your sexuality.

Dimensions of Human Sexuality

The totality of an individual is determined by the interactive relationship of
the different dimensions of human sexuality. There are three dimensions of
human sexuality; biological, psychological, and socio-cultural. These three
dimensions are a natural part of human sexuality and understanding this
concept is necessary.

Three Dimensions of Human Sexuality
According to Greenberg, Bruess and Oswalt (2017) in their book Exploring
The Dimensions of Human Sexuality, there are three dimensions of human
sexuality and these are:

The physical appearance, especially the development of physical sexual

characteristics; your responses to sexual stimulation; your ability to
reproduce or control fertility; and your growth and development in general,
all refers to your Biological Dimension.

The attitudes, feelings towards yourself and others, and your sense of being,
all refer to your Psychological Dimension.

The sum of the cultural and social influences that affect your thoughts and
actions; sexual identities and experiences acquired from, influenced, and
modified by an ever-changing social environment; meanings, skills, and
values from the people around you, all refers to your Socio-cultural
Dimension.

Sexuality as an Important Component of One’s Personality

● According to the American Psychological Association, personality

refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking,
feeling and behaving. It is how the various parts of a person come
together as a whole.

Health 3 Page 4 of 7
● As a developing individual, different aspects of your life constantly
interact with each other to help you develop your self-concept. Your
sex (biological dimension) strongly influences your perceptions of
sexual behavior which helps you develop your body image
(psychological dimension) that is influenced by the experiences you
acquire and learn (sociocultural dimension) from your ever-
changing social environment that leads you to your sense of being.
All these aspects of your life come together to help you understand
your sexuality which in the end help you develop your personality.
After all if your sexuality confuses you, then your personality
becomes obscure.

Sexuality refers to your total self.

Physical Self
The way you look as a man, woman or non-binary.

Mental Self
The way you think as a man, woman or non-binary.

Social Self
The way you interact with others.
Emotional Self
The way you feel about yourself and
others.
Ethical Self
The way you value your relationships.

Knot In summary, 2

There are different aspects that affect your sexuality. There is your
biological dimension, which is the basis of being a male or a female. Another
is your psychological dimension, which gives you the sense of being; that is
influenced by your experiences, culture, and social influences you acquire
from your socio-cultural dimension. All these dimensions constantly interact
to help you understand your sexuality, mold your personality, and help you
develop your total self.
