Question 05
Figure 1 depicts a sectional view of a gantry to be constructed. The first step in erecting this
gantry is to mark out the site and prepare the foundations. Assume that all other preparations,
including the delivery of plant and materials to site, have already been carried out. Because of
the asymmetry of the land, the two tower foundations differ in size. Further, foundation B will
bear more weight than the other. Tower B has to be placed on a prefabricated plinth in order to
raise it to the same height as Tower A. Finally, a level adjustment must be made at base A after
the plinth has been erected for B, and this is to be done by taking a theodolite sighting from the
plinth top. Activities and estimated durations of gantry construction are given in Table 4.
However, activities are not in sequence of erection.
(a) Identify the logical relationships of above activities and re-prepare those activities
according to the sequence of works
(04 Marks)

(b) Identify and list the immediate predecessor/s for each and every activity.
(04 Marks)

(c) Draw an Activity on Arrow (AOA) network diagram for the gantry construction. Use
critical path method to draw this AOA diagram.
(08 Marks)

(d) Calculate the Total Float and Free Float for each and every activity and identify the critical
path.
