APPROACH FOR IMPLEMENTING

ROBOTICS

James Edward T. Dabalos

SITUATION

A Warehouse Company want to purchase an automated sorting robot that

can navigate through the warehouse and pick and place objects.
INITIAL FAMILIARIZATION WITH
THE TECHNOLOGY

Item Points to be Distributed Driving Restraining

1. Can workers be openly assured of job retention? 20 15 5
2. Can workers be ensured that the sorting robot itself is safe to 20 16 4
work with?
3. Will workers attitude be positive with the increase/decrease 20 12 8
complexity of the work task?
4. Will workers find it easy to deal with new technology? 10 7 3
5. Can workers ensure that the mobility of the robot will not put 15 13 2
them at risk?
6. Can workers be ensure that the system will help the productivity 15 14 1
in the workplace?

Scoring
• Total Driving Points = 77
• Total Restraining Points = 23
PLANT SURVEY TO IDENTIFY
POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS

In applying the robot project, the design or the floor plan of the warehouse will be
changed according to the programmed/mapped inside the robot since the robot is
mobile and the application of the robot is a repetitive operation the warehouse will
have to adjusted accordingly so that the robot will work at the highest efficiency.
SELECTION OF THE BEST
APPLICATION

• The operation is simple and repetitive

• Multiple robots can work at the same time.
• Weight of the robot is 3000lbs
• It works like an automated forklift
• Minimal inspection is needed for the operation
• 1 robot can replace at least 3 persons in 24-hour period
• Maintainable

DETAILED ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
AND CAPITAL AUTHORIZATION

Economic Analysis
• In full working condition 1 robot can do 3 persons job with little to no error therefore the efficiency in the workplace
will increase.
• In the long term it will produce more money due to its efficiency and eliminating loss due to human error.
Technical Analysis
• It is very feasible since a bigger company like amazon uses a mobile sortation robot to make their workplace more
efficient
PLANNING AND ENGINEERING FOR
INSTALLATION

What is the basic purpose and function of the operation?

-The robot will pick and place boxes in the warehouse and sort it out according to its classification depending on how it is
programmed. It can also be used to find boxes that is now needed or that is ready for shipment.
What changes to other equipment must be made to accommodate operation and control in the robot cell?
-the boxes used in the warehouse must have a barcode or a way to be scanned in order for the robot to know what is
inside and where to put it. The warehouse itself must be mapped and the shelves must be installed with chips so that the
robot can locate it.
End effector design
-the end effector of the robot will have a simple mechanical gripper what will secure the box that it carries in place
INSTALLATION

1. Provision of electrical, hydraulic utilities for the cell.

2. Adaptation of standard pieces of equipment for use in the cell
3. Placement of robot and other equipment
4. Installation programming of the warehouse layout
5. Installation of scanner and depth sensor camera
6. Installation of safety systems
7. Fabrication of end effectors and other tooling
