In my experience, dancing embodies the essential quality of
making a connection with something larger than oneself and
ineffable. Dancing has the power to take you to a higher plane,
beyond the constraints of space, time, and reality. If you feel like
words are failing you, it's okay to act out. It's almost like a prayer or
a journal entry you're putting out into the world. Your physical
being serves as the instrument, and the music as the sheet. You
forget your troubles for a while and enjoy yourself by dancing and
living in the present. Dancing, then, is a wonderful way to bond
with other people in ways that aren't easily put into words. You
can tell when a dancer is really experiencing the music they're
performing to, and if the performer chooses the correct song,
technique, and timing, the audience will experience the same
emotions they're feeling as they watch. Offstage, too, whether
you're learning a combination with your dance partner or the
class, music and dance may transport you to a place of pure joy.
The spiritual connection to the movement is heightened by the
euphoric experience of connecting with people in ways that go
beyond words.
