Proposal: I propose why korea government should protect Jeju-haenyeo

Opinion paragraph:

There is a word called a Jeju-haenyeo, the women free divers of Jeju Island in Korea.

Many people in Korea know haenyeo in Jeju is decreasing now. In order to preserve Jeju-

haenyeo, people should be awareness the importance of their job. Korea government should

educate about the importance. There are three reasonsw why people have to preserve Jeju-

haenyeo.

First, Korea government should protect Jeju-haenyeo because it is considered as an

intangible cultural heritage. Haenyeo symbolizes the unique cultural identity of Jeju Island.

They work in lots of aspects such as cleaning the ocean, taking care of marine resources, and

developing the culture of Jeju Island. According to Lee sang-ho, UNESCO finally listed Jeju-

haenyeo Culture as a UNESCO Human Heritage Site at the 11th Intergovernmental

Committee of the Convention on the Protection of Intangible Heritage in Ethiopia on

December 1, 2016. It shows UNESCO also provides Jeju-haenyeo deals with lots of works.

They interact not only marine organism but also the environment in Jeju Ocean. I think it

means the Korean government should maintain to protect Jeju-haenyeo because no one

knows more about the sea of Jeju than Jeju-haenyeo. I strongly believe Korean government

must act on preserving traditional crafts and beliefs by protecting Jeju-haenyeo in advance.

Second, Korea government should create a social system for Jeju-haenyeo. The

social foundation for Jeju-haenyeo is not settled because there is no precisely socially

normative system and education provided to citizens is not high. According to Go seung-han

research, female divers in Jeju should be conducted more continuously and systematically. It
means that the Korea government should create laws for Jeju-haenyeo because Jeju-haenyeo

can develop further only when the social system is based. I think continuous and systematic

research is the first step from peoples’ attention. In order to develop peoples’ thoughts, Korea

government should make a social system for Jeju-haenyeo so that they can keep doing their

works.

Finally, the government should allow people to improve their perception of Jeju

haenyeo as a matter of interest, not indifference. the government should take the lead and let

people know the importance of Jeju-haenyeo. These days, many people do not know exactly

what Jeju-haenyeo are doing because people have only encountered Jeju-haenyeo in school

textbooks. The Jeju-haenyeo Community needs to redefine its role as a voluntary association

to lead the development of the community by innovating in line with new social changes and

seeking solidarity and cooperation with other civil society organizations. as a professional

worker with professional skills, social prejudice, commercial distortion, and low professional

status should change the social perception that haenyeo's job is a 3D industry or a job that

young people should not choose

For these reasons, Korea government should take the lead in protecting Jeju-haenyeo

first, Korea government should make a law for Jeju-haenyeo, and Korea government should

put more effort to develop people’s perspective of Jeju-haenyeo.
