6.6 A glass of diameter 50 mm containes some hot milk. The height of the milk in the glass
is 100 mm. To cool the milk, the glass is placed into a large pan filled with cold water
at 25℃. The initial temperature of the milk is 80℃. The milk is stirred slowly and
continuously so that its temperature remains uniform at all times. The heat transfer
coefficient between the water and the glass is 100 W/(m2℃). determine the time
taken for the milk to cool from 80℃ to 30℃. Kmilk = 0.6 W/(m K), ρmilk = 900 kg/m3,
cp milk = 4.2 kJ/(kg K). Neglect the effect of stirring work.

6.7 A thermocouple the juction of which can be approximated as a 1 mm

diameter sphere is used to measure the temperature of a gas stream. The
properties of the junction are ρ = 8500 kg/m3, c = 320 J/kg K and k = 35 W/m
K. The heat transfer coefficient between the junction and the gas is 210 W/m2
K. Determine how long it will take for the thermocouple to read 99% of the
initial temperature difference.
