have been reported to the BC Coroners
Service between January and July, which
is a record number for the first seven
months of a calendar year.
Overall, the rate of death in BC in
2022 is 42/100,000 individuals, more than
twice the death rate in 2016 when the
public-health emergency was declared.
Illicit drug toxicity is the leading
cause of unnatural death in BC and is
2nd only to cancers in terms of years of
life lost. At least 10,158 British Colum-
bians have been lost to the illicit drug
supply since the public-health emergen-
cy of substance-related harms was first
declared in April 2016.
By local health area, in 2022, the high-
est rates of death have been reported in
Lillooet, Mission, Terrace, Cariboo/Chil-
cotin and Powell River.

Since June 2021, devastating fires and
floods have left many community mem-
bers with little time to evacuate or recover.
The many artists and crafters residing in
Lytton and the Fraser Canyon area lost their
means of income, self-expression and cre-
ative outlet. The loss of supplies after years
of accumulation will take time to replace
and not everyone has the ability to priori-
tize funds to replenishing their art supplies.
