A. Family Structure, Characteristics and Dynamics
The Bernales family is a nuclear type of family consisting of 7 members. Mr. Lito Bernales, the father, and Mrs. Myrna Bernales, the mother. Mr. Bernales and Mrs.
Bernales have been married for 50 years and has 5 children.
Roy (son), Betsy (daughter), Glynis (daughter), Bianca (daughter) and Mattea (daughter); Age between 45, 42, 40, 36 and 20 years old. Mattea is now the only
daughter living with her parents because her other siblings now have families of their own.
However, everyone gets together with their in-laws and grandchildren on Sundays or important occasions to bond and celebrate. Mr. and Mrs. Bernales
sometimes have a difficult time making decisions because their opinions do not coincide, but at the end of the day they would arrive at a consolidated answer for
the final decision.

Mr. Lito Bernales, 71 y/o, a college graduate and retired sales engineer. Mrs. Myrna Bernales, 65 y/o, also a college graduate, worked in an insurance company.
Roy, Betsy, and Glynis are all college graduates, while Bianca graduated 4,444 due to hers only had two (2) years of college due to personal reasons, and Mattea
is currently a second-year nursing student at SSCT.
Roy, her eldest son, was a former seaman but was unable to return to work due to the pandemic. He has a wife who works at DepED and they have 6 children: 5
boys and 1 girl. Betsy works as a general practitioner at a private hospital in Ormoc City. Her husband works for D.A. and is currently studying law. Glynis is the
Regional Accountant/Chief. Actg. Sec. in the Region VIII Department of Agriculture and is also a Juris Doctor. She has 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, but was
separated from his ex-husband. Lastly, Bianca is a home-based call center agent at home and her husband also works for D.A. They have 3 children: 2, girls and
a boy.
Since Mr. and Mrs. Bernales is already Senior Citizens, they receive their allowance from their children the right amount to cover their monthly expenses such as
electricity, water, food and medicine for maintenance and to spend the money on their own needs. None of the family members are members of a large and/or
active parish in the Catholic Church.

C. Home and Environment

Mr. and Mrs. Bernales's home is located in the V&G subdivision in the city of Tacloban. Their house is the two-story type made of concrete and hard materials, but
the roof has some tiny holes that allows water to seep in when it rains.

Their house is well ventilated, there is enough water and lighting. However, breeding sites for insects, pests and rodents are vulnerable due to the dike behind their
house. Therefore, the family always uses an insect killing spray to get rid of insects and pests and to set mousetraps for rodents. Mr. Bernales and Mrs. Bernales
sleep separately with Mattea in different rooms. The couple normally sleeps at 10 p.m. and wakes up at 5 a.m. Mattea usually sleeps from 11:00 p.m. at 1:00 a.m.
and wakes up at 6:00 a.m. They have 2 bathrooms; one is in Mrs. Bernales's room and the other is at the back of her house, which serves as a shared bathroom.

Mrs. Bernales goes to the market in the morning or afternoon to buy fresh fish or meat and vegetables that are used for cooking three times a week. Raw
vegetables and leftovers store well in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and warmth. Their trash is picked up by a garbage truck once a week.
Schools, hospitals / health centers, markets and supermarkets / mini-stores are walking distance from their house or using tricycles or pedicabs for transportation.
Jeepneys are also available within their community if they want to travel to distant destinations. They live in a friendly, non-toxic environment with reliable
neighbors.

According to the couple, the only downside to their area is that it always floods when it rains and this can pose a health risk to their community.

Mr. Lito has rheumatoid arthritis (RA), while Mrs. Myrna is slightly hypertensive. They explained that it has something to do with their age known that they are
already senior citizens. They also smoke at least 1 and half pack of cigarette each day collectively starting from their 20’s (father) and 30’s (mother). Mr. Bernales
stated that it is impossible for him to stop smoking because it is already a part of his life even though he is well aware of the effect of smoking to his health. Mr. and
Mrs. Bernales drinks vitamins and their medicine maintenance every day to avoid any further diseases.
Roy had hemorrhoidectomy when he was 38 years old. He began smoking when he was still a teenager and until now, he consumes about 1 pack every day.
Betsy, is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 39 years old. She started eating healthy and avoid sugar-rich food since she was diagnosed to maintain a
normal blood sugar level. She is also currently pregnant and injects insulin 2 times a day as advised by her ob-gyn doctor.
Meanwhile, Glynis and Bianca, has no known medical conditions and is having a healthy life. Lastly, Mattea is overweight but now is changing her diet and
exercises regularly as advised by her family. The family members drink alcoholic beverages yet only occasionally except for
Roy who was mildly alcoholic but now doesn’t drink alcohol because, according to him, he is having a hard time defecating whenever he drinks alcohol. Based on
Mr. Lito’s story, he has a line of diabetes disease. The family eats at least 4 times a day including snack time at 3 pm. They immediately seek help to the
healthcare professionals whenever needed.

Identified Health Conditions

Upon reflecting on the interview, I have identified potential health and lifestyle conditions that may be a threat to the family. These potential health and lifestyle
conditions are rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, smoking, and mild hypertension. The dike that is situated at the back of their house may also be a health threat to the
family because it may cause diseases related to rodents, pests, and insects.
