STEP- PROBLEM

By the use of law of cosines we can know how far apart the two person from each other after a moment provided that we
have knowledge about their direction of motion and relative distance from their point of origin. Suppose they have
common origin and say one person heads NE while the other one heads 30 degrees S of W. Set P1 be the first person and
P2 be the second person. Consider P1 can move by 2 meters in just one second while the other one is just half as fast as
P1.
1. Assign points A and B as position of P1 and P2 respectively after time t in x-t coordinates. Set O be the common
origin and connect this with the points describe in the first sentence.(2 points)
2. What figure is formed? (1 point)
3. Establish the position of both P1 and P2 with respect to the origin. Express the model of the position as a function
of time. In order to do that, define the position x by finding the solution to differential equation dx/dt = v. Assume
that the speed is constant. (2 points)
4. Determine the distance of point A from B in t=20 seconds. (5 points)
5. What do you mean by distance AB? (1 point)
6. Construct another lines parallel to OA and OB respectively, then set C as intersection of these new lines. (2
points)
7. What figure is formed? (1 point)
8. Set OA as the first vector and AC as second vector. Write these vectors in component form and
8.1 Determine the value of angle OAC (1 point)
8.2 Determine the angle that AC makes with the horizontal axis. (2 point)
8.3 Define OC = OA + AC. (2 points)
9. Find the scalar AB. Is the result consistent with number 4? Why or why not? (4 points)
10. Suppose for number 8, we set OB as the second vector. What do you think will be the result?
10.1 Define the resultant vector of OA and OB and write it in component form. (2 points)
10.2 By referring to one of the properties of the figure formed in number 7, compare this resultant vector to the
vector AB. (2 points)

SHORT ANSWER (Make your answer direct to the point)

11. Differentiate vectors from scalar quantities. Define the connection of the two quantities. (2 points)
12. What do you mean by the negative signed value of energy? Note that energy is a scalar quantity. (2 points)

Mathematics brings some unique satisfaction.
