Main Question: How has kpop helped you grow as a person? How did they impact
your life?

Mariel (Interviewee): I am Mariel Denise H. Pena, I am 22 years old, and I am from

Jouie/Joana (Interviewer): Okay, so yung main topic kasi ng analysis natin is how is
how has kpop helped you grow as a person? So may mga follow up questions
ako related sa topic na ito and I would like you to answer this, like literally, ok
lang ba yun?
M: Yes, no worries
J: So first of all, who are these people that helped you? Sa kpop ah.
M: Ah ang , these people for me are ang all the members of Seventeen. Seventeen, ah,
introduction, Seventeen is a kpop boy group composed of 13 members. Tapos
Seventeen ang tawag sa kanila kasi 13 members plus 3 units tas 1 group is
equal to 17, so yan yung logic. *laughs*
J; Ano yung fandom name nila? Diba may tawag yan?
M: Hm?
J: Ano nga fandom name nila?
M: Ang fandom name namin is Carat. As in light diamond carat.
J: Ay oo nga pala. Ok Ok.
M: So…
J: Sino bias mo dun generally?
M: Actually ang first bias ko is si Jun. Kaso recently lang as in last year nag change
siya, si S.coups.Kasi mas nakikita ko yung, mas nakaka relate ako kay S.coups
more, last year more than the other members.
J: Bakit siya yung napili mo?
M: Kasi in a way na… Nung 2019 kasi, Ito yung, nagkaroon ng issue si… Actually
about sa health niya lang yun. Yung nag hiatus siya. So hindi siya naka dating
dito and after nun, eh tayo yung, Philippines yung parang last nila, last concert
nila nung…
J: Bago sila mag-ano…
M: Ya, tas after nun biglang nag pandemic. So, for two years, hindi siya nakakita ng
carat. Hindi siya naka-interact ng carat. Na personally.

M: Tapos, Ano pa yun? Uhm, through the pandemic medyo may time daw na ano,
nag relapse siya, nung mental health niya.
J: Ahhh, okay… Like naka-relate ka sa kanya in a way na ano, naging vulnerable ka
rin? Recently?
M: Oo, kasi parang two years din tayo na walang connection with other people yun.
J: Yuh
M: Tapos hindi pa natin nakikita yung isa’t-isa. Lalo na ako, bahay lang ako.
J: So yung para ano mo, parang naging take mo on this is through pandemic, naka-
relate ka sa kanya?
M: At saka yung parang, ano ba yun? Yung may mga bashers kasi siya. Actually kasi
one of them are yung nangyari kay Hoshi. Yung si J-hope kasi nag caption
siya sa instagram niya horanghae , ewan ko kung alam mo yun, basta
horanghae, it means kasi I love you, parang ganon on which ang unang
gumawa nun, unang gumamit nun ay si Hoshi. Pero yung mga toxic army ina-
ano, si Hoshi dawe ang gumaya kay Jhope eh 2016 pa yun ginagamit ni Hoshi.
Edi sa twitter una si Hoshi yung binabash nila tas nakarating kay S.coups.
Nadamay yung sakit niya ganon. Nilalabas nila yung pictures ni S.coups nung
ano, lumalabas pa siya ng hindi maganda ang pakiramdam niya nung
nagtherapy na siya. Yung parang mga cyberbullying na nangyari, yun yung
cyberbullying kasi na-experience ko na rin yun.
J: Clarify ko lang, so pinaka nakarelate ka sa kanila this pandemic specifically nung
nagkaroon ng case of cyberbullying?
M: In a way, tinulungan ako ng Seventeen to cope since I relate to them so much. At
saka yung bumangon kasi everytime na nasa pinaka-lowest sila.
J: Parang ang naging inspiration mo sila? Ganon ba?
M: Yes, bumabangon siya, especially para sa mga members niya saka sa carats ganon.
Like I could be like them too, na at my lowest point gusto ko rin bumangon
for the people I hold dear.
J: Follow up again, why them of all people? Why Seventeen?
M: Kasi triny ko this pandemic, ah like tumingin ng ibang group like BTS, Straykids,
Bigbang, peo kahit anong gawin ko hindi sali naging ganon ka-influence
unlike Seventeenas akin.

J: Yuh, yeah, I understand that. I can relate, I can relate din sa part ko like BTS to me
is home kahit andiyan naman na yung Enhypen, Straykids, Ateez, Shinee for
me.
M; *chuckles* So yeah Kaya sila, Seventeen talaga out of all people. Like it was
them that got my attention and inspired me.
J: Well then how did you discover these people?
M: Okay, fun fact, ano yun? Uhm na-discover ko sila dahil kay Ciara which is one of
my best friends since senior high. It was, uhm, a month or two since nung
nagsimula yung senior high, umupo si Ciara sa upuan ko nun tapos nanonood
siya ng Weekly Idol nung seventeen nun which is yung random play.
Hinayaan ko lang siya umupo dun tapos tinitignan ko yung pinapanood niya.
Bigla ng tinanong, sino yan? Sabi niya Seventeen. Which is na-curious ako
kasi madalas na sinasabi ng karamihan pag kpop is BTS and EXO so na-
amaze ako na oh wow, may groups din palang nag-eexist na ganyan. Na iba sa
mga naririnig ko lang. Kaya ayon, pinanood ko sila, nakinood ako kay Ciara
kasi nga na-curious ako and natawa ako because yung unang nagkamali dun is
yung leader, na hindi madalas mangyari kasi nga leader yun, tas ayon
pinagtawanan siya ng members niya and natuwa ako kasi ang fun pala nila and
ang gaan sa pakiramdam panoorin.
J: So you were attracted to them dahil sa personalities nila more than or before their
music?
M: Oo, sa character nila ako na-attract which strangely enough energized me too.
Parang nakakahawa yung character nila na at that moment they were able to
motivate me and touch my life. At that moment, I was sure I’ll be with this
people.
J: Okay, Okay.
M: So ayon na, yung pinopromote nila yung music nila kaya nakinig na rin ako sa
music nila which is at that time, the first song I listened to na kanta nila is
Ulgu Shipji Ana or Don’t Wanna Cry. Nung pinakinggan ko yun napaiyak
ako kahit syempre hindi ko maintindihan yung language, parang naintindihan
ko pa rin yung message. Parang at some point naka-relate talaga ako. Through
their music, they comforted me and encouraged me to do things for the better,
to move on na rin. Tapos, nung after nun, I decided to play their other songs
and nagandahan ako. Sobra.

M: Nakaka-uplift siya, yung iba. Yung iba naman at that time, makaka-relate ka.
Dahil lang mismo sa music lang talaga nila parang naiintindahan ka nila. It
was as if they were beside me all these time, na I found companions from
them. Yun.
J: Okay, noted. Next naman tayo. We parang tackled na this kanina but let’s review
lang ulet. When did you needed them the most?
M: Though out pandemic talaga. Actually, nung una ko silang kinailangan is nung
Senior High talaga nung nakilala ko sila which is amazing kasi, yung timing
talaga, dumating sila sa buhay ko when I needed someone the most, when I
was at my lowest. Kasi I’m going through stuff pa nun kasi syempre ibang
environment, ah lumipat din ako sa Manila so wala akong halos kakilala lalo
na sa school so talagang nakaka-confuse and stress na that time tapos uh,
kakagaling ko lang ng break up kasi nun. Kaya nung nakilala ko sila sobrang
naka-relate talaga ako sa kanila. Tapos ngayon namang pandemic, yung mga
songs nila, oh my god, nung nag release sila kami ang pinaka spoiled, spoiled
na spoiled. Andami nilang na-release. Nag release sila ng album, mini albums,
singles, basta andami naming events nun.
J: So their mere presence lang nakatulong na sayo? Is that it?
M: Yes, like knowing na kahit pandemic andiyan sila for me, for us. The fact too di
nila kami iniwan and instead gifted us their presence made me feel assured
and secured. Diba? I found love in them. Nakakatuwa.
J: Okay noted. So overall nalang, how did all these contributed to your personal
growth, like as a whole already? How ba?
M: Ano… *pauses for a while* Thirteen kasi sila so parang 13 personalities naaano
ko sa kanila yung parang si S.coups yung pagiging strong niya, yung kahit
anong mangyare tatayo at tatayo siya, si Mingyu naman yung kahit malayo, or
kahit hindi sila nagsasalita andiyan ka na nararamdaman yun nung mga
friends mo. Like kahit hindi vocal ay ramdam mo pa rin ang support niya.
Some of the members are like literal sunshine too. Napaka masayahin nila and
hay nako, sobrang jokester, and weird in their own way which I like by the
way kasi napaka-true nila sa sarili nila, at least based sa nakikita ko. So these
13 members, represented me as one. I have related from them so much.
J: Ah so parang these people molded you to become the person you are right now?

M: Oo. Ganon. As much as they were there for me nung kailangan ko sila, they’ve
also accidentally influenced me to become like them in some ways. That’s
how they changed and you know, affected my life for the better.
J: Very well, that would be all since I think we’ve tackled enough naman na for our
main question. Correct me if I’m wrong ha, but here’s my input so far.
Basically, you met and had them at your most vulnerable of times and in the
long run they helped you and influenced you to be the person you are today?
M: Yes, oo.

IV. Defining and Naming Themes

In line with the main question “How has k-pop helped you grow as a person?
How did they impact your life?” codes are determined from the data gathered during
the interview. These codes are then grouped and categorized to determine themes
significant to the research. The following are the themes named and their definition:

Factors that trigger change. Among this are the influencers, random facts
about Seventeen, and personal experiences which were constantly mentioned as the
reasons and the features for which the interviewee has improved for.

Circumstances. This theme includes the time before pandemic, time of

pandemic, dilemma, personal experiences, and changes in decision. These are the
timeline and incidents which the interviewee has notably mentioned which were
highly significant in the process of the interviewee’s personal growth and
improvement.

Decision-making. It constitutes of the changes in decision, affirmation, and

uncertainty which in this context are the notions perceived or considered principal by
the interviewee. These have been the decisions that reflect upon her response during
the interview.

Self-awareness and character development. This theme has been completed

by the realizations, self-acknowledgement, and changes in behavior. It was generated
from the codes made after the process of self-reflection has been done. Hence, it is the
reflection of what k-pop has done for the interviewee.

V. Data Analysis

As k-pop or the Korean pop culture industry has been largely claiming
prominence around the world, the Philippines has lay claimed no exception from its
domination. In an attempt to address this matter and better understand the reason
behind its tremendous attainment, the interviewer came up with the general question,
“How has k-pop helped one grow as a person? How did they impact one’s life?”
Guided by the axis of this query, an informal but in-depth interview has been
conducted through the use of an online call appointment. With the interviewee’s
consent, the data gathering was recorded for the purpose of transcribing the audio
afterwards.

In accomplishment of the thematic analysis, the interviewer utilized an

inductive approach which allows the data itself to determine the themes. Results
showed that the interviewee has given major credits of their character development
towards a particular k-pop boy group which created a pattern and took up the code as
influencers and the theme as factors that trigger change. This is due to the significant
number of times this group has been mentioned making it the principal influence that
the interviewee has taken account of. The interviewee has also stressed upon the
personalities and the music this group makes which according to the interviewee, was
able to shape them as a person and touch their emotions thus triggering change for the
better. Other factors has also been mentioned that was essential for the progress which
the interviewee has gone through. Those involve the inevitable but peculiar
encounters, such as the difficult transitions in life. The interviewee stated that this
certain k-pop group came across their life at the perfect time they needed them the
most-- it was their lowest point in life where hardships have forcefully penetrated
their way in simultaneously. These has taken up the themes circumstances and
decision-making which only has a slim boundary from one another. With respect to k-
pop, as the primary aid and source of motivation of the interviewee, growth has took
place from the innate capability of the interviewee to recognize changes, acknowledge
