ABSTRCT
This paper presents an experimental study on the characterization of sintered ceramic tiles
containing glass wastes. Several ceramic tile mixes possessing a target mean compressive strength
of 20 MPa were prepared with 30%, 40% and 50% glass replacement with ceramic powder. A
clay mix with silica sand and waste glass was prepared as a ceramic mix aggregate. The
mechanical and durability performance of glass waste based ceramic tiles was assessed by means
of mechanical tests, water performance and also bulk density tests. Results obtained showed that
the produced ceramic tiles with partial replacement by ceramic powder, although it has minor
strength loss which possess increase durability performance as waste glass powder increases.
Results also showed that ceramic admixtures with waste glass aggregates perform better than the
control ceramic mixtures concerning compressive strength and capillarity water absorption. The
partial replacement of ceramic powders with waste glass in ceramic tile production helps to lower
maturation temperature with a view to reduce the cost of production of these ceramic products.

ABSTRACT

In this study, NH4H2PO4, Li2CO3, and Ca(OH)2 (ACL) powders were mixed with and without iron
dopant Fe2O3. The two variant mixtures (i.e., raw mixtures with and raw mixtures without dopant)
were then subjected to microwave energy radiation. The samples were characterized by various
methods of analytical methods. Microwave heating has no unmelted crystalline phase (raw
material) left within the produced glass samples. Both compositions were able to form glass after
experiencing glass transition temperature through microwave energy radiation for 15mins at a
temperature of 956oC. The connection between mixtures with and without dopant and degree of
microwave absorption, and how they were influenced in glass formation were discussed. The FTIR
showed the vibrational band of the samples with different structural change. SEM observations
showed sample containing 1.03g wt% CaO, had a large columnar-shape rutile phase that
appeared in the cross-section.
