1. For starters, I never wanted to be a medical technologist and never thought to become one.

I
have my fair exposure to what it’s like to be a medical technologist. As a child, I always thought
the work of medical technologists is debilitating and draining physically and mentally. However,
my late grandfather genuinely loved for me to become a doctor he loves the idea of having a
doctor for a grandchild and the eldest for that. I think he just wants someone to take care of him
because it’s always what I hear from him when the topic of me going to college and what I
would major in. At that time, I was still indecisive about what I wanted to major in so I was kind
of considering and not considering taking up medicine. But a fortuitous incident changed my life,
my grandfather died, he had prostate cancer and unfortunately, it had already dispersed which
affected his other organs. His sudden death affected the entire family gravely; I remember how
much I cried at his funeral and at times I would reminisce the moments when he was still alive. I
was excited to graduate because then I would be his first grandchild for him to see graduate
high school and for him not to witness me graduate and receive my diploma truly broke me. I
made a promise to my mother the night I was crying to her because of my grandfather’s
departure that I will choose what my grandfather wanted for me. She suggests taking Medical
Technology as my pre-med profession because it is the best pre-med choice for continuing in
medicine.

Before and after I started this journey, I was skeptical and doubtful if I can even do it, and
prepared for the trials and tribulations that await me. I’m scared to make the smallest mistake;
fearing that one of them can cause my whole dream and career. These past weeks of my college
life taught and showed me that it’s all about trials and errors and that it’s fine to fail what’s
important and what matter is that I learn from that mistake, not immediately but definitely, and
make it a lesson to my future self. I still experience anxiousness and do not trust my capability
and competence, but I’m trying my hardest to improve and achieve progress. I think if I certainly
give my best five years from now after I receive my medical technology degree, I might already
be a doctorate student holding a medical technology degree and have successfully passed the
board exam, which makes me not only a degree holder but a licensed medical technologist
practitioner. And by then, I will be relearning and reapplying the lessons and knowledge I
obtained and learned from BSMT and adjoining them with the new things I will be attaining and
receiving in my new journey towards my nearing goal. BSMT is not the last but it would surely
leave a lasting impression and a great lesson for me.

2. From my perspective, I think the following roles and responsibilities of medical technologists:
nurturing honesty, execution of professionalism, and efficacy in cooperating with various
healthcare professionals are, is what more crucial and should have or be possess by healthcare
personnel such as medical technology practitioners. The ability and potency of attaining these
standards should be in the making and by now should be gradually being developed and
cultivated by medical students (medical technologists) way before their college journey comes
to an end. Plenty of the roles of medical technologists can be categorized or stated under
professionalism as if a person demonstrates professionalism in their studies no doubt that they
will be good employees and practitioners. Those who manifest honesty and integrity in their
studies are much more likely to execute their roles properly and satisfactorily. Furthermore, a
medical practitioner who is able in interacting and imparting messages to other healthcare
professionals and their patients prevents complications and issues from transpiring that can
hamper their performance.

3. Set of principles is relevant, establishing a sense of the constitutional manner in a work setting.
Possessing exceptional ethics and morals contributes to and holds great indispensability to the
business or company’s development. Likewise, in the medical field; hence, numerous rules and
protocols are implemented to ensure order and amity in the work environment and with its
employees. Nevertheless, adhering to the ethics of a particular institution or company is
executed with a certain level of discipline and complains to the subsisting principles.
Consequently, I can deduce that one must acquire a sense and possess a disposition of
professionalism to permit an individual to effectively abide by the code of ethics which can be
connoted to the first code of ethics of medical technologists in the revised version.
