What is Clinical Laboratory Science?


 also called Medical Technology, is the health profession that provides laboratory
information and services needed for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Clinical
Laboratory Scientists or Medical Technologists, perform a variety of laboratory tests,
ensure the quality of the test results, explain the significance of laboratory tests,
evaluate new methods and study the effectiveness of laboratory tests.

LICENSURE

What is Licensure?
 For medical technologists, licensing is often granted through a professional body or a
licensing board composed of practitioners who oversee the applications for licenses.
One must take and pass the medical technology board in order to have a license.

PRC (Professional Regulation Commission)


o It is the instrument of the Filipino people in securing for the nation a reliable,
trustworthy and progressive system of determining the competence of
professionals by credible and valid licensure examinations and standards of
professional practice that are globally recognized.
o The creation of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) was embodied
in Presidential Decree No. 223 which was signed by President Ferdinand
Marcos on June 22, 1973. Later, it was amended by PD 657 but was repealed
more than two decades later by RA 8981, otherwise known as the PRC
Modernization Act of 2000. The first PRC Commissioner, Architect Eric C.
Nubla assumed office on January 2, 1974.

REGISTRATION

What is Registration?
 Passing the local board examination is a requirement of registration before one can
practice the medical technology profession legally in the Philippines. However, one
may not be granted the certification of registration yet despite passing the board
examination if he/she hasn’t celebrated his/her 21st birthday (RA 5527, Section 21)

ACCREDITATION

What is Accreditation?
 A process by which institutions or programs continuously upgrade their educational
quality and services through self-evaluation and the judgment of peers.

NAACLS (The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences)


o Is committed to being the premier international agency for accreditation and
approval of educational programs in the clinical laboratory sciences and
related health professions through the involvement of expert volunteers and
its dedication to public service.

CERTIFICATION

What is Certification?
 refers to the confirmation of certain characteristics of a person or organization. This
confirmation is often, but not always, provided by some form of external review,
education, and assessment.

ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathologists)


o The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) is a recognized leader in certification
of medical laboratory professionals. By earning credentials from the ASCP
BOC, laboratory professionals demonstrate their competence to carry out their
responsibilities in this critical profession.
o A professional association that provides programs in education, certification,
and advocacy on behalf of patients, pathologists, and laboratory professionals.

AMT (American Medical Technologists)


o Founded in 1939, American Medical Technologists (AMT) is a nationally and
internationally recognized certification agency and membership society. AMT
certification examinations are developed, administered, and analyzed using
industry standards and state-of-the-art methodologies.
