Interviewer: Today we’re 02talking to Robert Samson, an astronomy professor in the UK and an expert on stars and
planets! Welcome to the show, Robert.
Robert: Thanks for having me.
Interviewer: So, Robert, we want to talk about solar eclipses. First, explain to us – what is a solar eclipse?
Robert: It happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth. The moon covers the sun, and it
becomes very dark outside, even during the day. A total eclipse is when the moon completely covers
the sun and a partial eclipse is when the moon covers part of the sun.
Interviewer: Let’s talk about the Great Solar Eclipse on 21st August 2017. Where were you at the time?
Robert: I travelled to the USA that summer because the USA was the only place in the world to see the total
eclipse. People in Europe and Asia only saw a partial eclipse. We were staying in Oregon because we
wanted to be in the first place where people could see the eclipse.
Interviewer: You were definitely in the right place then! When did the eclipse begin?
Robert: It began at 9.05 in the morning in Oregon, but the moon didn’t completely cover the sun until 10.19. The
eclipse ended at 11.41.
Interviewer: So it lasted over two hours. And what were you doing during the eclipse?
Robert: I was sitting with my daughter. We weren’t looking directly at the sky because it’s dangerous to do this.
You can hurt your eyes. My daughter was taking photos and posting them on social media. I particularly
enjoyed seeing four of the planets. We saw Mars, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter. A total eclipse rarely
happens, so it was a very special experience.
Interviewer: It sounds amazing. Thanks for joining us today, Robert.
Robert: No problem.
